whats everyones view on the 300, ive got a laser, but have got bored of it, looking for something a bit more exciting. what are they like on waves, my favourite bit about sailing the laser was downwind in big waves, is the 300 just as much fun??

I've only sailed one inland.  Certainly much more fun than a Laser.

1001 actually, but very fast on a close reach in a medium breeze and of course very fast compared to most boats in the lighter stuff.  Suspect a bit tricky in waves or lots of wind.

If you do a search, there has been quite a lot of discussion on the RS300 before.

The rs300 e-group is the most active of the RS classes, visit http://www.rs300.com - www.rs300.com to find out more.  I got one in october and its been pretty exciting, despite the steep learning curve.

Very, very fast and an absolute thrill to sail but will punish you if you get it wrong!!!

Have you considered an Int.Moth as an alternative?

the int.moth is a development class so the boat would need to be updated every now and agen but the 300 is a one design so racing is done on skill rather than money!

Fair nuff, my bad.

Owain, a development class can actually be cheaper to race in because you can make your own gear, or use whatever gear you want, instead of having being forced to use expensive RS or Laser gear. As for developments, boats don't develop fast enough for the cost of them to be much of an issue. You would have to replace bits on a development class because they were out of date, far less, and at much cheaper cost, than you need to replace sails and foils to stay competitive in an SMOD.

owains moth is in the stages of being lightened and rebuilt as it was a bit of a dog when he bought it (big hole in the deck and about 20kg over weight) he wants a boat he can just go out in and race aswell as a boat he can play with/ go for a blast in i believe. correct me if i'm wrong owain.

RS300's are certainly more fun than a Laser, they reward good sailing but they are a bit unstable and can bite back very hard if you do get it wrong, and I found it a bit uncomfortable hiking upwind with the narrow decks.

Have you thought about an RS600? Lots of boat for the money and more stable than a 300, plus no more painful beats, just lay back and enjoy it!

thanks for all your comments. wouldnt a 600 be much more difficult to sail. i had ago in one for about 10mins last year and really struggled to tack. Can they be mastered by most reasonable sailers with trapezing experience?

Both boats can be tricky to tack, but for different reasons.

The 300 has a soft sail with only one full width batten, which means as you come out of the tack the leech powers up first which then screws you back into the wind, plus it's a long walk from one side to the other.

The 600's fully battened sail means you don't get this effect but you do have to cope with the mechanics of getting in off the wire, and out the other side. The good thing is it can be done as slowly as you like - come off the wire, kicker off, tack like a laser, sort your self out on the new side then when you are ready, go back on the wire. This can then be speeded up with confidence until you can do flying wire-to-wire's with full kicker on!

Both the 300 and the 600 both take time to get used to, as I guide I was a top-ten Laser Ladder sailor, I bought a 300 and it took a couple of months to get it round the course, and about six months before I could race it effectively. After a year I was winning opens.

When I bought the 600 I could nurse it round the course, but again it was a good six months before I was up to a respectable racing standard.

If you are prepared to work at it, either boat is achievable. If you can sail a Laser in big winds you should be fine in either boat. Most of both 300 and 600 fleets are made up of bored ex-Laser sailors!
