I have done a few events/champs at Mayflower. They have a great commodore and team but launching can be challenging. I'd bet good money its a friendly family club.

I sail at Saltash, racing is on Tuesday nights, usually light winds with lots of shifts, lots of lasers, not enjoyable to sail really, but hey thats jus my opinion.

Depending on exactly where you are going to live you might look at the clubs east of Plymouth Salcombe, fair youth fleet, best club house in the world, sometimes "interesting " sailing Dittisham, scenically nearly as good as Salcombe, v keen youth fleet,no club house, cheap Starcross, a bit of a trek, sailing constrained by the tides, best "proper" sailing club in the area, enormous youth fleet

Both Saltash Sc and torpoint good, for tactical, sitting out boat, racing in tidal waters. Both have active youth fleets and good socials, so worth looking at. It all depends where you live - as mentioned previously. It can be a nightmare tryin to get across the city to race in the evening after work - unless you're a teacher.

Yes i think it would be nice to get another 4k on the water even if it was only to see if the old boat points and get a tune up.

Strange things goin on in Plymouth. I think Mayflower SC are in the final death throes - just about holding it together - and the plymouth corinthian maybe more interested in being a wedding and business meeting venue. The Racing was supposed to be combined between these 2 clubs this year due to falling entry numbers. Racing taking place at selected dates throughout the summer evenings and some weekends. There as you say plenty of assymetrics around at mount batten, and plenty of activity on the learning side. There's plenty of space in the dinghy park at the moment - maybe due to students bein away, and also a cull of non payers. Slightly off topic for a mo. i'm sailin a 4k there at the mo, not racin, just for fun and practicin, out most weeks, but not seen many other assymetrics out at all? I think we need more boats out to generate interest in sailing dinghies never mind racin.. |
