Hi Guys - I am about to move to Plymouth from Fareham. I am in Hill Head Sailing Club at the moment, sailing an RS Feva with my kids (12 and 9). Looking for a family friendly sailing club down that part of the world. Can anyone suggest a good club? Thanks Al |

When I was at Uni i was a member of Royal Plymouth Corinthian YC They were pretty friendly, the club was split into yachties and dinghy-ists and spots in their dinghy park always used to go quick. But phoenix warf round the corner is pretty good and alot cheaper than Queen Annes Battery Marina. Don't know what the score is with Mountbatten now but that may be worth a sniff aswell. Bit of a longer drive or a water taxi though.
Blimey forgot Mayflower at phoenix warf. Cheaper and not as nice a biulding as RPCYC but still nice enough. They all used to combine for racing.

When I was in Plymouth 30 odd years ago , Mayflower S C was THE dinghy club on Plymouth Sound. They had some of the best dinghy sailors in the South West and were an incredibly friendly and helpful bunch. Plymouth Week was a 'MUST DO'.
Happy memories!!
Glad to hear they're still going but disappointed that you almost forgot them tack'ho !

Depends where you will be living in Plymouth. There is really good dinghy sailing at Torpoint (across the Ferry from Plymouth), Saltash (across the bridge) or Cargreen (a bit further up the river Tamar). All are brilliant clubs with good dinghy racing (not quite Solent size fleets but competitive & friendly) and also all run cadet evenings/courses. There is also Plymouth Youth Sailing run out of the Mountbatten Centre. If you need any more info, just PM me. I am from that neck of the woods! (Follow my www link!)
------------- A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Thanks to all of you for the info on Plymouth sailing clubs. Gives me plenty to go on when I get down there. If you see an orange hulled Feva afloat (last years Southampton Boat Show display) give us a wave. Al |

Might also be worth looking at http://www.ppsa.org.uk - www.ppsa.org.uk , they deal with most of the racing and events carried out in Plymouth Sound. Wednesday nights seem to be the nights for racing on the Plym esturay, both the Youths from Mount Batten and boats racing with Royal Plymouth Corinthian were out tonight...... The other clubs I mentioned in the e-mail are still worth looking into, but on the Plym side, the most active for racing seems to be with the Royal Corinthian. The beauty of the Plymouth area is that there are quite a few clubs within a very short sailing distance of each other and all will let you take part in racing with quite a low entry fee, for instance you could choose to keep your boat at one club for the training benefits for the kids ie cadet groups and be able to take part in the other clubs' racing series. So far we've found every club down here really friendly to new members.

It's a shame because the Mayflower hasn't really had too much of a turn out this year, we've went down for racing some Tuesdays and nothing being on, although this might have been due to cancelations at the club which we were not aware of. The Royal Corinthian does have the most active racing at the present moment and hopefully this year has just been a blip for the Mayflower attenedance wise. There are quite a few boats we know of planning to do the Mayflower Final Fling and on the plus side also, the cadet training seems to be going really well with what we've seen. Another point which we thought was very interesting was that we entered the PPSA reggatta (late because we only found out about it on the Tuesday) and the Assymetric fleet had about eight boats on the start line. The only 2 from our club were an Iso and ourselves and there is a fair ammount of assymetrics boats sitting in the dinghy park, at least 7 RS800s, a good few 4000s, Boss's etc. We at least thought the local boats who knew about the reggatta would have put in a good appearance. Saying that, the Laser fleets, Enterprises and symmetric classes had a good turn out.

Strange things goin on in Plymouth. I think Mayflower SC are in the final death throes - just about holding it together - and the plymouth corinthian maybe more interested in being a wedding and business meeting venue. The Racing was supposed to be combined between these 2 clubs this year due to falling entry numbers. Racing taking place at selected dates throughout the summer evenings and some weekends.
There as you say plenty of assymetrics around at mount batten, and plenty of activity on the learning side. There's plenty of space in the dinghy park at the moment - maybe due to students bein away, and also a cull of non payers.
Slightly off topic for a mo. i'm sailin a 4k there at the mo, not racin, just for fun and practicin, out most weeks, but not seen many other assymetrics out at all? I think we need more boats out to generate interest in sailing dinghies never mind racin..

Yes i think it would be nice to get another 4k on the water even if it was only to see if the old boat points and get a tune up.

A bit further away, but what about Saltash SC, or Torpoint Mosquito (know nothing about torpoint- just cool name )

Both Saltash Sc and torpoint good, for tactical, sitting out boat, racing in tidal waters. Both have active youth fleets and good socials, so worth looking at. It all depends where you live - as mentioned previously. It can be a nightmare tryin to get across the city to race in the evening after work - unless you're a teacher.

Depending on exactly where you are going to live you might look at the clubs east of Plymouth
Salcombe, fair youth fleet, best club house in the world, sometimes "interesting " sailing
Dittisham, scenically nearly as good as Salcombe, v keen youth fleet,no club house, cheap
Starcross, a bit of a trek, sailing constrained by the tides, best "proper" sailing club in the area, enormous youth fleet

I sail at Saltash, racing is on Tuesday nights, usually light winds with lots of shifts, lots of lasers, not enjoyable to sail really, but hey thats jus my opinion.
------------- Needs to sail more...

I have done a few events/champs at Mayflower. They have a great commodore and team but launching can be challenging. I'd bet good money its a friendly family club.
