Bit more complicated the actual towing rules post 1/1/97
Maximum weight of 3500kg now thats gross weight of car fully laden not the minimum kerb weight single axle unbraked trailers, And also the weight being towed shouldnt exceed more than 75% of the cars weight. Double stackers with nig boats and kit quickly add up |

MAM (max authorised mass) is the relevant weight. Unbraked trailers must have a MAM of 750kg or less and can be towed by pretty much anything that is approved for towing (not all vehicles are but TBH, if it ain't you won't be able buy a tow bar for it anyway). Once you get into the realms of braked trailers then it gets more complex but, in a nutshell, the MAM of the car plus the MAM of the trailer must total no more than 3500kg.
* The above relates to people who passed their driving test on or after 01/01/1997. If you passed your test before 01/01/1997 you can tow larger trailers without passing an additional B1+E test, details here https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car.

You can still tow dinghies after 70. When you reach 70 and get a new licence you can still tow up to 3.5 tonnes total on the ordinary licence and to keep the extra categories, assuming you actually had them in the first place, you get a medical which is cheaper from the online private sector (£50) than your NHS doctor (£75).
