Kitesurfing pal of mine helping me refurb a new office made a chance remark the other day, regarding the towbar on my electric vehicle, which got us into a discussion about towing and why I had one.
He then astonished me by adding he's not allowed to tow anything (he's got a VW T5) why not said I, haven't got a license he retorted.
Apparently these days it's yet another test and probable training scheme, I've no idea, it's bad enough that this generation (80's kids) don't even bother to buy cars, but the fact they have go go another hurdle before they can tow a boat, explains why the travelling is falling off obviously from natural wastage.
Something else we should perhaps consider offering maybe, how do these kids learn to tow I wonder, what are the hoops they have to jump through, when did this all start? Anyone here recently passed a towing course?
It's a big hurdle.

Thought I'd just check, Beginners towing course three days £660... Hmm think he'll take up some other sport that doesn't involve towing.

Go on DVSA site for true details, came in 1997 I believe, you will find you can tow a trailer even if you passed yesterday.

You need a full car licence before being able to tow with any larger vehicle. A full car licence already lets you tow trailers weighing no more than 750kg. You can also tow heavier trailers with a car as long as the total weight of vehicle and trailer isn't more than 3,500kg. https://www.gov.uk/towing-rules" rel="nofollow - https://www.google.co.uk/search?source=hp&ei=NMpzXsTnFqaOlwSEm5LADQ&q=driving+licence+requirements+for+towing+trailers+in+great+britain&oq=driving+licence+rules+for+towing+a+trailer&gs_l=psy-ab.1.1.0i22i30l2.4972.24956..31000...0.0..0.142.3738.30j14......0....1..gws-wiz.....6..0i131j0j0i362i308i154i357j0i3j33i22i29i30.1-LNjc7w81o#" rel="nofollow - https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:K2hWjJh69aQJ:https://www.gov.uk/towing-rules+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk" rel="nofollow - https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=related:https://www.gov.uk/towing-rules+driving+licence+requirements+for+towing+trailers+in+great+britain&tbo=1&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwilwZuRpafoAhWyoVwKHelrB3MQHzABegQICxAL" rel="nofollow -

As posted above, this really is very old news. Cannot think of any dinghy trailer combo that’s over the above limit. It only really effects caravan owners and people moving heavy machinery/plant .

Annual checks for everyone over pension age, sorry but the numbers sitting in the middle lane of the countries motorways suggest you folks need re-testing, albeit along with a host of others. Now if someone could tot up the cost of that and just re-employ the traffic police you used to see pulling people over and driving at 69 in the middle lane so people didn’t just sit at 75-80 in the outside, that would be great!

I drive on a lot of 60mph single carriage roads, I would charge for under speeding (if that's a word) as well as speeding, it's just as dangerous, don't get me started on HGV's, rolling road blocks.

At least tractors CAN'T go faster. Cars that do 40 everywhere, whether its 60 or 30 really piss me off.
And 2 lorries alongside each other on a motorway when I'm towing. Hate. And somehow, when its 4 lane, they can use 3 lanes. Who's dumb idea was that?

Fake news it may be, but at least one person thinks he needs a special license to tow a trailer and until today I assumed everyone who had a full license could, so it was a none issue.
But it's not, so the question must be how many more potential folk who might be persuaded to take up racing sailboats also think like him, it's another barrier, other than it being elite, snobby, expensive and too difficult to bother with anyway...

If said person is so easily put off, that they can't Google or even look etheir licence, perhaps a sport that requires a certain amount of nouse is not for them?

IGRF But it is a none issue and you knew the right answer but couldnt be bothered to check so you could tell him the true state of affairs. Instead you posted boll@@ks on here. The knowledge is one click away for anyone with half a brain .

In iGRFs defence I have had someone tell me the same thing and if you pasted after a certain date when you renew they don’t put the towing code on the licence

I lost my motorbike entitlement when I sent my licence off to redo my photo, when I contacted them, they said no problem just send us a copy of your licence or pass certificate, I had neither, so I have been redoing my test, theory and hazard perception test, which is difficult, then mod 1,which I found harder to do than mod2.

So it turns out, but some of us aren't totally welded to our keyboards 24/7 Fat & Naked and I didn't happen to have googling when he told me all that and why would I even be interested I've towed ever since. So it turns out to be a technicality that insiders happen to know, like lots of things insiders know and are hopeless about when encouraging newcomers and anyway if I didn't post bollox all you morons would still be doing other than running around screaming and waving your hands in the air, would be posting about covid19, whilst shutting down all your places of recreation, despite the fact that there's probably not a case of the virus within 30 mile radius, like here...

Bit more complicated the actual towing rules post 1/1/97
Maximum weight of 3500kg now thats gross weight of car fully laden not the minimum kerb weight single axle unbraked trailers,
And also the weight being towed shouldnt exceed more than 75% of the cars weight. Double stackers with nig boats and kit quickly add up

MAM (max authorised mass) is the relevant weight. Unbraked trailers must have a MAM of 750kg or less and can be towed by pretty much anything that is approved for towing (not all vehicles are but TBH, if it ain't you won't be able buy a tow bar for it anyway). Once you get into the realms of braked trailers then it gets more complex but, in a nutshell, the MAM of the car plus the MAM of the trailer must total no more than 3500kg.
* The above relates to people who passed their driving test on or after 01/01/1997. If you passed your test before 01/01/1997 you can tow larger trailers without passing an additional B1+E test, details here https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car" rel="nofollow - https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car .

Wrong !
although when people turn 70 they lose C1 and D1 unless they provide proof of meeting the medical standards

You can still tow dinghies after 70. When you reach 70 and get a new licence you can still tow up to 3.5 tonnes total on the ordinary licence and to keep the extra categories, assuming you actually had them in the first place, you get a medical which is cheaper from the online private sector (£50) than your NHS doctor (£75).
