Totally agree, when testing gets in the way of education something is going wrong. Maybe the problem with 1980s comprehensives was that they were trying a 'one size fits all' system that did nobody any favours. Education has to be tailored to the individual's abilities, it's no good teaching quantum mechanics to a student who's natural ability leans towards making beautiful furniture (or boats......) with their hands or visa versa. Testing should be used to find out what talents a student has and help them to realise their potential rather than brand them as success or failure.

which is why the best comps  were 'stealth trilaterals' and used setting and streaming intelligently.

One of the biggest problems education faces is the reverse snobbery of some people over education and  various activities  ( we'll not even  open the tray of tins of worms that labels activities as 'girls activities ' and 'boys activities ' and how oddly arbitrary  that distinction is made  ) ...

spot on , as  coaching can take so many forms and depends on the people and boats available

skills and drills can be done   'alone' - does the current instructor handbook still have the 21  boat handling / racing skills exercises  listed along with  two -boat tuning  - a good number of them can be done  solo or  just with oversight   - this  is the 'barre work'   to pinch  term from ballet.

if you have two boats of the same class   you can start doing some two boat tuning  and so on ...

So word has it the RYA are worried, (seriously worried) that participation might be also down at club racing level, not something I'm experiencing round here, it's pretty much static to improving if anything. How's things at your club participation wise?

At my club:  Sunday racing massively down.  Wednesday evenings massively up. Open attendance down in double handers, but not in single handers (depending on current fashion).

General non-racing sailing much the same.

People don't want to devote a whole day to it, probably don't want to split up the weekend too much either.
