however you are not comparing like for like - as often a man who is the same weight and height as an elite female is 'too small' compared to elite males ... and in none weight banded sports - this promising but 'too small' lad is likely to be directed to another sport - it;s official policy in many places that a 'cascade' process occurs ... same with the march of performance in both male and female records ... today's athletes are taller, heavier, stronger, better nourished and the AFAB athletes in sports where there isn't 'side effect' reproductive retardation ( and this has been reduced by introducing minimum age limits in the gymanstic events - to prevent the overgrown pre-pubescent 15 year olds seen in the not that distant past) are likely to have had some form of 'control' of their menstrual cycles / method of reducing 'weight' and frequency of periods ... it is also interestign to look at where the current Female record / winning times are in comparision with male record / winning times ... as the 'convergence' is less pronounced than was thought but the rate of performance improvement is equaling out ... There is a relatively simple answer to help even out participation (to me anyway)...
Make the 470 a mixed class. You will probably end up with female helms and male crews predominantly (weight on the wire giving better righting moment and all that). Frees up a class slot (if needed). I doubt you will ever get a true 'Open' singlehander at the Olympics. The Laser used to be referred to as 'Open dinghy' which I assume meant male or female sailors could compete (IIRC it was a few cycles back).
IMO we need something like the Finn in the Olympics. The Laser shows the grass roots link (pretty much anyone can sail a Laser across a range of conditions, not many could sail a Finn in the same conditions effectively). |

Imho- a finn is probably easier to sail than a Laser, given optimum crew weight for the conditions. There's less to fight with as progressive improvement and customisation is permitted within the rule set.

How do they know? I'm an RYA member and don't recall telling them what I sail. I tend to lie on demographic surveys anyway, as they annoy me. |

When ou get your membership blurb from the RYA it categorises your principle interest. Mine says 'sail cruising' IIRC. |

IYRU or whatever it was didn't like Cathy Foster and Pete Newlands in the 470 class in 1984, and changed it to MM and FF.

If you say windsurfing on the RYA main sport thing, you get 3rd party insurance, don't you? So maybe many dinghy sailors who dabble in windsurfing would tick that box?

Insurance was pretty much the only reason windsurfers joined back in the day and that was because a windsurfing insurance guy cobbled together a scheme which lined his pockets and eventually earned him an MBE or some such similar twaddle such is the hubris that is the RYA |

(Late response, yes) Women run the 100m hurdles using 33 inch hurdles. Men run 110m using 42' hurdles. To account for different stride lengths.

Now there's a thought for a 2024 nomination. Could even be run with competitors at monitors in their own back yard. I think WS may have missed an opportunity there for Tokyo 2020, the Japanese would have been able to come up with a format which could have captivated the youth of the world a la Mario, Moshi etc... |
