3M Adhesive remover is the best by far, maybe a bit pricey but it does the job and will not damage the gelcoat or metal, it can be used for many other jobs and well worth having in your maintenance box, can be found in most worthwhile chandlers shops.

thanx for thr replies.....i've tried some windowlene which seemed to work quite well on the gellcoat......doesnt appear 2 hav gone soft so far!

its got most of it off apart from the very last bit so will try some of the other cleaners that hav been suggested....

white spirit has always worked for me aswell normally try that first

WD40 every time!  If you can't fix it with WD40 it can't be fixed.

Just don't use it as a general lube on your boat for blocks travellers etc.

in the end i got all the stuff off with brasso....really worked and it hasnt melted ne holes in my boat

I used methylated spirits on an old laser where the previous owner had taped the gunnels.............lots of hard work using it and a strong cloth succeeded and it looks as good as new without any nasty scratching/marks etc
