Is there a cleaner that will remove that horrible sticky residue left by duct/duck tape?

It has to be safe to use on metal wings(boat is a laser4k) and the hull itself???...i.e. i dont want it to tarnish the bars and melt the hull !!!

the guy who I bought the boat off seemed to like using duct tape on everything and i don't like to use 2 much of the stuff cos of the residue...so am now desperately tryin to get it off

any help much appreciated!

kasey.

Remeber T Cut is a scouring agent and will scratch your boat, eventually if used on the hull

For a good remedy eucalyptus oil is a winner, what the bus agencies used in the 50's to get tar of their buses from newly laid roads. A little dab of it goes a long way and it is natural. Get it from most herbal/aromatherapy places.

As for Duct tape, Golden Rule - never use outside where the UV gets it, at all! And if used should only be for emergancy use, eg repairing a whole while on the water.

Only tape that should be used is Dacron or PVC, and even then after a long exposure period they will leave a nice sticky residue, but never as bad a duck tape.

For shallow scratches a glass fibre rubbing compound is best. You won't see many boat builders with T-Cut on their shelves.

Wouldn't try Brasso, think it would be too abrasive. Acetone or white spirit might work, but I'm not going to recommend either because I'm not sure whether they'll damage damage the hull. I'd go with the eucalyptu oil first, doesn't sounds like it'll damage anything, which is the big thing to check for! The other thing is to check it on a small, relatively unimportant bit first if anything does go wrong..

i migt try brasso on the wings...as it polishes trophies fine without burnin or tarnishin but i think it would be too strong for the hull....

i'll giv the eucalyptus oil a go....sounds a good idea

Are the wings coated at all? I wouldn't try brasso on anything other than the bare material (I've used it on plastic and stuff as well, but it can scratch).. thinking about it I'm not sure brasso would work well, it's a polish, not a solvent. Seem to recall lemon juice being good actually..

Petrol, it desolves most contact type adhesives.  Be careful if you acetone its likely to make your glassfibre gel coat a bit soft.

3M Adhesive remover is the best by far, maybe a bit pricey but it does the job and will not damage the gelcoat or metal, it can be used for many other jobs and well worth having in your maintenance box, can be found in most worthwhile chandlers shops.

WD40 every time!  If you can't fix it with WD40 it can't be fixed.

Just don't use it as a general lube on your boat for blocks travellers etc.

I used methylated spirits on an old laser where the previous owner had taped the gunnels.............lots of hard work using it and a strong cloth succeeded and it looks as good as new without any nasty scratching/marks etc
