Lots of good advice on this forum! LPW and JimC are correct. Any patch must cover the old material, but cannot replace it, so don't cut away any part of the sleeve.
Top-sections fail a lot less than they used to, provided you place the collar rivet facing the stern. Line up the arrows and tape the spars together. If the spar bends don't try to straighten it by putting the rivet bow-first. Do it gently shore-side, with the top-section inserted in the bottom-section. End-for-ending the top-section is legal, and doubles the life of the spar, but you must rivet the old collar-hole to keep the spar relatively watertight (and legal). Nick Livingstone UKLA Measurer.

You should be able to make a repair and keep the sail competitive (assuming that it was competitive before hand!) Maybe you wouldn't use it at a World Championship but...< id="_npwlo" ="applicationpwlo" height="0">
