So, I need to do something about the Alto boom, the mast is carbon, the gnav is about rotted away and the gooseneck is a round section. So either I need to search classes that have a similar fixture or cobble something together.
In an ideal world I'd like an upside down version of the RS100/300 wheels on the Gnav doo dah only maybe run the wheels on the boom, but first I need to order it all up. Ordering booms online is tricky given there is no such thing as 'spare boom for Mk 1 Alto' you can just go 'add to basket'. So I guess it's locate some carbon tube then find all the bits and self assemble. Or does anyone know different? (with links if poss.) Ian (foxwell) mentioned just get yourself a Superspars boom , but which one is the question, what classes use them. I did wonder about B14 booms but they're conventional kicker, which I'd like to avoid if possible.

B14 booms are alloy. So no good for your carbon quest.

Grumpf, you could order a 505 Carbon boom from P&B but this is set up for a conventional kicker. Try speaking to aardvarke boats http://www.aardvarkracing.co.uk/spars-and-tubes and get them to make you one to your specification. I have talking with Terry about building me a 505 boom, they offer a bespoke product at a very good price!!

a contender carbon boom is just a tube with no fittings apart from outhaul. Main and kicker take off are from straps. Made by superspars.

Graeme can you post pictures of how your Gnav system works at present? I am not sure how a boom that has not been designed for a gnav would cope with the different loadings. We used to have a separate goose neck on the mast for the top of the gnav and a slider (couple mm of bigger the the boom diameter) that ran along the boom. The slider then spread the load. the system worked really well. But if i was in your situation i would definitely speak with Aardvark racing, and see if they can make you a new system. I would think its fairly easy.

Would a 49er boom & gnav not do the job?
You can buy them from Ovingtons.

That would be ironic, me finding a use for a 49er..
![]() Thanks for all the tips, lots to work with, not sure I'm any the wiser.. I need to measure the boom length I guess, that would be a start. Shame they don't just have standard booms sold by length.

Were that the truth.. As it is some f**ker in dingo world just things it's a great idea to fit a boom with a square section to a gooseneck with a round shaft, obviously the square peg in the round hole deal never quite gelled here. Then to fix it thought it would be a great idea to drill through the whole ensemble and fit a split pin. That would be a stainless split pin to an alloy extrusion in a salt water environment (it gets better) held together with pop rivets.. f**ker in dingo world is right..

Or maybe a Dart 16. No boom to worry about at all.

Hi Graeme
I can sort it all out for you if you would like, I can get hold of the new boom and the appropreate fitttings so the nav will work properly with the mast you have.
The fittings will be the same or simmilar to the RS500 you had.
Give me a PM if you want my help. Dan |
