Subject: Carbon Boom question

So, I need to do something about the Alto boom, the mast is carbon, the gnav is about rotted away and the gooseneck is a round section. So either I need to search classes that have a similar fixture or cobble something together.

In an ideal world I'd like an upside down version of the RS100/300 wheels on the Gnav doo dah only maybe run the wheels on the boom, but first I need to order it all up.

Ordering booms online is tricky given there is no such thing as 'spare boom for Mk 1 Alto' you can just go 'add to basket'.

So I guess it's locate some carbon tube then find all the bits and self assemble.

Or does anyone know different? (with links if poss.)

Ian (foxwell) mentioned just get yourself a Superspars boom , but which one is the question, what classes use them.

I did wonder about B14 booms but they're conventional kicker, which I'd like to avoid if possible.

B14 booms are alloy. So no good for your carbon quest.

Grumpf, you could order a 505 Carbon boom from P&B but this is set up for a conventional kicker.  Try speaking to aardvarke boats http://www.aardvarkracing.co.uk/spars-and-tubes - http://www.aardvarkracing.co.uk/spars-and-tubes  and get them to make you one to your specification.  I have talking with Terry about building me a 505 boom, they offer a bespoke product at a very good price!!

a contender carbon boom is just a tube with no fittings apart from outhaul.  Main and kicker take off are from straps.  Made by superspars.

the same, but different...

Graeme can you post pictures of how your Gnav system works at present?  I am not sure how a boom that has not been designed for a gnav would cope with the different loadings. We used to have a separate goose neck on the mast for the top of the gnav and a slider (couple mm of bigger the the boom diameter) that ran along the boom. The slider then spread the load.  the system worked really well.  But if i was in your situation i would definitely speak with Aardvark racing, and see if they can make you a new system.  I would think its fairly easy.

Would a 49er boom & gnav not do the job?

You can buy them from Ovingtons.

That would be ironic, me finding a use for a 49er..LOL

Thanks for all the tips, lots to work with, not sure I'm any the wiser..

I need to measure the boom length I guess, that would be a start.

Shame they don't just have standard booms sold by length.

Were that the truth..

As it is some f**ker in dingo world just things it's a great idea to fit a boom with a square section to a gooseneck with a round shaft, obviously the square peg in the round hole deal never quite gelled here.

Then to fix it thought it would be a great idea to drill through the whole ensemble and fit a split pin. That would be a stainless split pin to an alloy extrusion in a salt water environment (it gets better) held together with pop rivets..

f**ker in dingo world is right..

OKay I lied about the last bit...
Or maybe a Dart 16. No boom to worry about at all.LOL

Hi Graeme

I can sort it all out for you if you would like, I can get hold of the new boom and the appropreate fitttings so the nav will work properly with the mast you have.
The fittings will be the same or simmilar to the RS500 you had.

Give me a PM if you want my help.

surely an I14 boom would be the most similar boom to start from?

I would just like to say that
Dan is a very decent bloke.
Never met him, but nice offer.
Helping the elderly like that.

It's what "big society" is all about
I shall email David Cameron immediately
so he can pop this up at the conference.  ;-)

Pierre!

Where have you been hiding that?

Humour.. It's actually humour, have you been sailing on the sea and caught it?

Dan is not a decent bloke Dan is the clumsy cack handed muppet that broke the damn boom in the first place.
Dan breaks everything Dan touches, he's gotten through more boats, booms, masts, racks & sails in the short time (relatively)I've known him than the entire club put together in a ten year period.

Dan made the term 'Desperate' redundant very early on.

Now he's offered however, I shall almost certainly take him up on it, it'll be useful field experience for his remedial course at retarded engineer school.

Actually graeme, all i have broken over the last 5 years is: 1 poorly made hull,  1 mast, 1 boom, 1 wing, 1 daggerboard.

Not too bad i think considering some of the condidions I have been known to venture out in.

I will start trying to sort you out a boom.

Right thanks Dan here's what I want.

I want it made of carbon yet painted red. It must come with a 'mind your head' sticker on both sides plus a 'this side up' as a reminder to some of the dimmer crew types I have to deal with these days. Port and Starboard stickers might not go amiss either.

I'd like you to use your Engineering talent to rig some sort of auto kicker sensing device so the kicker adjusts itself automatically without my crew risking breaking her fingernail(s) and whilst your at it the same could possibly apply to the outhaul tension.

A mirror attachment and/or video mount might also be useful so we can view the truly wondrous thing that is us in action.

It would also be useful if a footplate could be fitted, I have on occasion found it useful to stand on it when the boat inadvertently falls onto its side, maybe even some steps, to assist one 'ahem' challenged vertically to mount the gunwhale whilst keeping ones feet dry.

I'm happy to provide a more than adequate budget £5 10s 6d or current equivalent.

So that would be about £56 then in current money
(might just be enough money if you invested it in the 1600s)
Can Dan just provide you with Port and Port stickers.

Dan, I'd STFU if I were you.
That adds up to an entire boat you have trashed.
I still stand by what I said though.

Graeme....  you STFU as well.

He omitted to mention the sails he introduced his head or other equally un attractive body parts through.

You put your beak right through one..

It was like that scene in Finding Nemo, where all the seagulls splat into the yacht sail.

I think Port and Starboard stickers...but handily stuck on the wrong side on and lacquered to the boom so they cannot be easily removed....
