Hi guys,
I am a keen dinghy sailor (sorry). Have recentely gained acces to a Hobie 14. Any insight on how to make it go faster and generally how to sail a cat would be most helpfull.
Thanks,
Alex

It would be if it was a Hobie 14 , but is is a classic Hobie 18.  I think it is a snapshot from the free as the wind Hobie video which shows wave jumping and people water skiing off the back of the 18's

Im assuming your not looking at staying in class?

Ways to make things faster...
Loose weight (probibly not an option here)
More rag (always an option)
More righting moment (expand the beam, add racks, more wires)
And a good old fashioned bit of boat tuning and time on the water might do the trick too :)

Well have replaced the original jib with an old wayfarer jib which i found lying around so more rag has pretty much been as exploited as possible. And will re-add the trapeze wires again.

Hmmm... the quest for more rag isnt really satisfied by a slightly bigger jib...
What you should be asking is how big a kite can I cram on this before certain death?

I recommend you go to www.catsailor.com , look at the Formula 14 forum.

Some of the US guys have 'F14'd their Hobie 14s quite successfully. If you tweak the boat with a new main, jib and spin that measure to F14, you'd be at the max for the H14 platform

Just remember it is a beginers cat.........  Add a kite to it if you want a bit more fun, however it will only give you a taste of things to come if you plan to continue with multies.

This is a 14
