Hi guys,
I am a keen dinghy sailor (sorry). Have recentely gained acces to a Hobie 14. Any insight on how to make it go faster and generally how to sail a cat would be most helpfull.
Thanks,
Alex

It would be if it was a Hobie 14, but is is a classic Hobie 18.  I think it is a snapshot from the free as the wind Hobie video which shows wave jumping and people water skiing off the back of the 18's

Im assuming your not looking at staying in class?

Ways to make things faster...
Loose weight (probibly not an option here)
More rag (always an option)
More righting moment (expand the beam, add racks, more wires)
And a good old fashioned bit of boat tuning and time on the water might do the trick too :)

Well have replaced the original jib with an old wayfarer jib which i found lying around so more rag has pretty much been as exploited as possible. And will re-add the trapeze wires again.

Hmmm... the quest for more rag isnt really satisfied by a slightly bigger jib...
What you should be asking is how big a kite can I cram on this before certain death?

I recommend you go to http://www.catsailor.com - www.catsailor.com , look at the Formula 14 forum.

Some of the US guys have 'F14'd their Hobie 14s quite successfully. If you tweak the boat with a new main, jib and spin that measure to F14, you'd be at the max for the H14 platform

Just remember it is a beginers cat.........  Add a kite to it if you want a bit more fun, however it will only give you a taste of things to come if you plan to continue with multies.

This is a 14

A reinforced mast??  why??  Hobie 16s added a kite quite successfully without any reinforcement of the mast.  And seeming as the addition of the of increased apparent wind would mean the main would be much closer in and thus acting as a backstay for the mast which would oppose the forward pulling forces of the kite on the mast quite nicely.  Plus the fact that cat masts are hardly flimsy!   Again, reinforcement........why??

well whena person at my club tried to put a spi on c catapult he needed to renforce the mast

Lets not be too harsh on the kid.  The way i see it, he's got PLENTY of scope for learning and thats never a bad thing.
Its the comment in choosing a boat section where feva-sailor has stated that the RS500 has a more effecient hull shape and is quicker than the 29er that worries me.

guys from memory and i am open to be corrected here doesnt the catapult and i think the unicorn use round section masts as apposed to the usual large wing section used on most cats could explain why beefing up was required ?

bit like the 5.9 and the likes have diamonds but the hobies dont have you ever compared the weight my h17 mast weighed a lot more than my 5.9 mast thickness of metal i presume .

so the kid could be right?

The hobie 14 has an eliptical section and I believe the hobie 14 masts are effectively cut down versions of the 16 mast.  Same shape, wall thickness, only real difference being in mast height
In short, a hobie 14 mast could happily take the addition of a spinniker without needing any additional re-enforcement.
On the subject of the addition of the spinnker to a catapult, I havnt seen one up close, nor raced one, thus why I didnt comment on that particular part.

I have sailed a 14 a few times and know how little bouyancy is in the bows - it is like sailing on two ice scates, so please let me know how you get on with a kite!!!   It could be very wet!!!
