Hi all,

It's time to start thinking about new gear for next year. Our 4 boat fleet has been well used this year.

We might buy enough rigs so that each of the 4 boats have a Radial and a Standard rig available, eight in total

We store the rigs, battens out, sail rolled around the mast inside the club house. This means eight rigs in total. We have the money to do this it's about working out the details

Booms+battens stay in the boats together with all the other parts

Two of the four boats have Holt Vangs, the other two have mixture of bits

Normally the Holt Vangs we use will be attached to the rig, if we go this route we will have to buy 6 more vangs. They will cost £160 each so make up a good chunk of our expenditure.

Bearing in mind that these Lasers are used by fairly casual Club sailors is there foolproof way detaching the vang from the rig and leaving it in the boat, saving us some money as we would only need two vangs, to complete the set for the four boats? (This will also reduce the maintenance load).

Thanks for the link a seemingly good product fatally flawed! "

From the item description:

"This has been tested with the official Laser Harken XD kit fitting and works. The pin may not fit the Holt or Allen replica systems". May not fit, does it or doesn't it?

Please note, the handle and button are made from aluminium so please wash your quick release pin very carefully with fresh water after sailing. Oh no!!! Not another SS and Aluminium combination to immerse in an electrolyte and watch the gas bubbles comming off. Can't they do any better? Don't these people ever think.......answer .....No they don't.

I used to use a standard drop nose pin when switching full and radial on my Laser, all SS. Just pick the right size.

How about thinking upside down?
Attach vangs permanently to the boom, and use a snap hook to snap onto a shackle that is permanently attached to the mast vang fitting

Can’t remember, but this might be the way Minorca sailing does it.

And it is better that the system is not hooked on at both ends, and is different to the standard connections so that they don’t get “borrowed”

Realistically you cant change the setup on the boom nor use additional fittings at the bottom without making it work properly.

As above the Quick release pin is a nice product but definitely not something I would put on any club boats. The drop nose pin is a good option but from what I saw from reviews they seem to fail and come loose quite a bit.

Although it says it wont fit other than Harken Im sure it does as the mast fittings are all the same

Whats wrong with a pin and a ring?

I used to use a pin and ring, but they are a pain to use, and easy to lose the ring, particualrly if your hands are beyond the first flush of use! I've never had a drop nose pin come out, either on the Laser, used for 10+ years on the kicker, or in the last 6 years with one at the top and the bottom of my jib. They are more expensive than a simple clevis pin and ring though .

I like the idea of attaching it to the boom in a semi permanent way.
