I went on Sunday and was on the H2 stand for four hours - first time to the show in decades but really enjoyed it. Was hoping to see more of the show but the constant stream of interested punters meant I never really got away from the stand.

The show is always heralded as the start of the season which has always perplexed me, I have recently moved from a club up North where the season starts actually clashes every year with the show. I am now at an all year club so less of an issue. I would think a show the week before half term would have more appeal. People are less likely to be torn between sail or show they are still in pre season preparations so the commercial stands would benefit. Obviously and especially considering last year weather would be a factor.

I've seen Sunday's weather forecast, so I'll go to the show instead. haven't been for a few years, and haven't had to pay for a ticket ever I think. What's parking like on Sundays normally-Saturday's usually hard.

Maintenance can be taken care of by painting rather than using a clear coating. Paint lasts a lot longer. We had a guy with a carbon Phantom mast painted white. The guy never needed to do anything with it but the clear coated guys were having to refinish every 2-3 years.
That said I am not convinced Carbon is the was forward for every class. Although the big advantage with a carbon mast can be repaired. With ali once it has bent it is usually replacement time. Edited by jeffers - 01 Mar 19 at 5:58pm |

I'm not a Streaker owner but having gone from ally to carbon on a Contender I really wish carbon booms were allowed on my two person boat. Simply nicer to use in all ways, some carbon masts have insane price tags and yes UV protection requirements but a boom is under the cover and need not be anything like to tech hungry as a mast.

Very well put Ardea. The other issue is that with the tin masts there are different stiffness for different weights and how would that be achieved in carbon. Clearly I know practically it is easy but more complex to control and economically. Playing devils advocate thought Aluminium extrusion is a very expensive volume method of manufacturing (or at least the plants I have seen are) the point will come when the carbon is cheaper than alloy which is part of the boom argument. With regard maintenance - paint the carbon white - uv damage solved

Main issue for me (although I no-longer have any stake in it) would be the maintenance aspect of carbon spars on a streaker. An FRP streaker is a fantastic package for very low-maintenance sailing (also lovely boats to sail). Introducing carbon spars just for the sake of it would ruin this, and introducing them to actively look for performance gains opens another can of worms.
