Hi all,
I'm making a desperate plea for your help. I sail in Dun Laoghaire harbour, just south of Dublin city centre. The semi-state that manages the harbour is planning to build a 400m quay in the harbour, essentially bisecting it, in an effort to attract cruise ships. The result would be a complete decimation of dinghy sailing in the harbour, a fact which the company is choosing to ignore or spin. Generations have learned to sail dinghies in Dun Laoghaire harbour. It's where we hold our Frostbites, it's where our kids learn to sail, and it's the heart of dinghy sailing in Ireland. Please please help me voice opposition to the destruction of our harbour. The company which is proposing to construct this berth is holding a 'public consultation'. All you have to do is email one or two lines saying why you think the proposal would be bad for dinghy sailing in the harbour. I know this forum is mainly populated by people from the UK, but if you've ever sailed in Dun Laoghaire, if you ever plan to sail there, or if you know anyone that has, please take the 2 minutes to email this address with your objections: info@dlharbour.ie Please help - we have nowhere else to sail! Peter

Sadly money may win over dinghy sailing however hard one may try. Personally I would burn all cruise liners or moor them at Chealsea Reach for homeless Londoners to live in.
I will email.

Have you considered one of those online petitions? Like these they seem to be effective, I'll email but generally ticking one of these boxes is easier..

the other side of the argument is the jobs and investment it would bring to the area.... it's a big ol' bay, I'm sure you'll find somewhere to sail.

Citation? I've still not seen evidence that a change.org or 38degrees petition has ever had any real influence. |

Yep and Ireland seems to be on a roll again. I'm doing business in Ireland as their engineering/manufacturing prices are now excellent. The Greeks are doing the whole of the Eurozone a favour in keeping the Euro low. They also have a low corporation tax rate. So, I'm not surprised to see this type of development starting to emerge again. |

I've never been very sure or convinced about that. Yes lots of jobs building the infrastructure, but how much cash do cruise ships actually put into local economies? They don't use local accommodation, most shore visitors will buy a few snacks and maybe a knick-knack or two. I was in Cadiz last year every day 1 or 2 cruise ships visited, never stayed as long as 24 hours. You'd see the groups from the ships being shown the sights at that end of town, and then they were off again. Unless they charge gigantic rates for docking I'd think they may well put more of a strain on the local environment and economy than be a benefit.

Obviously we're not privy to the planing application and assumed long term income projection, but Dublin's a fantastic city which thrives with short-stay tourism. Any project that keeps footfall high is going to be welcomed I'd have thought.
