Just been reading about the I14 PoW cup, which sounded rather epic. Are they the last class left where the one race make the National champion? The Fireflies had the Gore as the Championship race years ago, and did the N12s do the same with the Burton Cup? Anyone else do it/used to do it?
Any classes temped to introduce it? It has a certain simplicity about it. |

When you look back at the Canoe History it seems there didn't use to be any such thing as a National Championship. There were a number of trophies that were competed for on different days of the week long national meeting, but one wasn't necessarily a bigger deal than another. As far as I can see it was only when they started introducing points scores for the whole week that they declared a National Champion. I think the 14s were unusual in that one of the prizes was always considered a bigger deal than the others, and they declared it to be the National Championship, which in itself is odd if you think about it, because normally a Championship is a series of races or competitions or whatever, not a single entity.
For my money if it isn't a series then its not a championship. Edited by JimC - 02 Sep 14 at 12:58pm |

I have to say the brutality of 'winner takes all' makes it very appealing reading... as for whether I'd consider it a full-blown championship if I were competiting... sure, why not, even a muppet like me could 'get lucky' in one race so I rather like the idea of it.

Do you prefer the term "class championships?" Mind, if people from all over the country come to one place and sail together in a competitive way, aren't they deciding who is the best of them nationally? |

Me? I would sooner see it as the Such and such Cup or Trophy.. A dozen or so folk in one pond, or even 50 over a weekend by the sea, then saying you're the national or even worse the 'European' Champion is embarrassing, I couldn't look someone straight in the eye and tell it.
A 'National' Series where folk have raced North South East and West I guess isn't so bad, but it's always seemed a bit BS to me. |

No, not bollio, usually. In theory National Championships mean, "Come and have a go if you're ard' enuf". If three people think they are in with a chance of winning, then that's a race. What happens is that loads of people turn up for a good sail/beer/laugh, whatever. Next week is the Lightning Nationals where there will be about thirty boats. I am sure that those more up to date with Lightning form than me could predict the top four boats but not necessarily the order of finishing. The recent Byte Nationals contained only a disappointing 13 boats. We all knew who one and two would be...and so it was. If you, young Fuller, (or anyone else) fancied a crack at them...then bring it on! I know it is off topic but small turnouts do not necessarily mean lack of competition.

I'll be going for the Carbon Kona National Championship this weekend at Hayling Island.... I hope there's a beer from a kite surf brand sponsor for the winner.
