I keep reading the expression 'Cat rigged' when applied to the Aero, is it a Mercan thing? Can someone explain where it came from?

I thought it was a euphemism.... naturally you should use the 9m rig (all racing sails need to be 8.0+)
However there's an opportunity to 'pussy-out' and put a 7m rig on it when it's a bit windy... hence 'cat' rigged. Not quite sure what the 5m rig is for... storm sails on a Design Category C boat, whatever next?

It's a 'merican thing, probably originated around Nantucket sort of area - it means a boat with a single mast and fore and aft sail - i.e. a Laser, Finn, Aero etc. They have things called Catboats round there - rigged like that. No relation of a catamaran.

Historically, the mast was a lot further forward than in the dinghies we are talking about - almost up in the bows.

Is that not a sort of gaff rig Rupert, I'm not up to speed on all these rig descriptor terms I just about know what a Bermudan rigged thing is and that a Mirror is gaff rigged, a Gaff in my vernacular is somewhere you live..

It is a gaff, but you can also have them with other shape sails - a wishbone bermudan for example:

A Mirror has a gaff (or did - mine still does) but is gunter rigged - the gaff ends up parallel to the mast, almost. The Mirror mainsail has no change of direction where the gaff ends and mast takes over, and will actually set (if likely badly) on a bermudan mast.

Like mentioned above I have head of a cat rigged boat as a boat with a single mast carried well forward and a single large sail, usually a gaff rig or freedom rig (like a wishbone rig). Usually they have a shallow draft and wide ish beam. More for cargo as the mast is well out the way than racing. cant imagine they would perform to well.
There is however the Melges C Scow which I think classes it self as a Cat rigged boat (possibly the reason for the C??) Looks kind of what you would get if you rafted two fireballs together and but a single mast forward between the bows. http://www.melges.com/boat.php?p=pages/boats/C-scow |

Well it's answered my question, we wouldn't use the term to describe a rig and that's the main thing, I shall, in future, steer clear of that sailing anarchy place during periods of inactivity here..
