Bit awkward for Merlins then, any event sponsors out there with logos that look good on a clinker hull?

Taken with several other clauses, it means you are allowed to have boat/personal sponsors logos on sails (subject to keeping clear of the sail number and national lettters, subject to class rules also) but that an event cannot require you to carry their advertising on your sail (unless you're on a windsurfer, in which case the sail is the only place an event can have their sponsor logos)

The RYA prescriptions apply if you're in the UK and not in an Interntional class.
http://www.rya.org.uk/SiteCollectionDocuments/Racing/RacingInformation/RacingRules/RYA%20Prescriptions%202012.pdf Specifically
[later] Basically though the sails are reserved for the individual sponsors of a boat, and the front of the hull reserved for event sponsors. This is a pretty sensible rule because its a lot less hassle peeling stickers off hulls than sails. Imagine what your sails would look like if you had the sticky residues of different Nationals sponsors stickers from the last three nationals left on them... Edited by JimC - 21 Feb 13 at 7:27pm |

I think my main query is with advertising on sails. In seeking out a sponsor for an event does this rule out adverts on the mainsail?
Like this for instance or this SB I'm not so sure if that applies to events only.... 20.3.2 Subject to any limitations on Advertising in the applicable class rules or the rules of the relevant System, Advertising chosen by the Person in Charge may be displayed on a boat or part thereof, except on the areas detailed in Regulation 20.4 and Table 1. |

IIt tightens things up perhaps, but doesn't actually change anything- the front 25% of a dinghy hull has effectively been reserved for event stickers for a fair while. |

No, table 1 is for Event advertising only. I'm not quite sure what this means in practice. Perhaps things like company X sponsors an event and wants its advertising on the boats. In that case they are restricted to where they can place it. If you're sponsored as an individual by Joe's Garage, you can still put Joe's advert on your sail. That's my interpretation anyway.

No not by Sail numbers you'll be please to hear.....
As I understand it the rules surrounding advertising in sailing are now whoily encapsulated in ISAF regulation 20. This particular section seems to have been drafted by lawyers. Anyway I am trying to figure out the regulations as they stand for a non-olympic class dinghy with regards to advertising on sails. This advertising could arise from regatta or personal sponsorship and is something to be aware of when seeking out sponsors for events. As I read it it would appear that Table 1 here effectively prohibits sponsor advertising on sails, either event or personal. Is that the case. Does this apply to mainsails only, what about jibs spinnakers? It also does seem the rules are more proscriptive for ISAF classes - but I'll look at this later.
