What's the all up weight of a proper International 420? That article is all about the weird, generally rather heavy, Club 420s that are used predominantly by US College sailing.

Sounds like redneck turdo 420 has finaly caught up with about 1986.
There is more to the last two decades than vinylester and a modest weight loss, down from 'gross' to 'reasonable'. The 420 is great 70's style small dinghy. If you want a good 21st century small dinghy, you need to look at the hull shape and the whole boat together. |

Whatever the intentions, mods, etc etc there in no way on earth that this will ever displace the international 420.
That may not be the intention, but it's how i read the article though i confess i didn't realise a club 420 was a differant boat.

The article is not a fine example of clear-written journalism. Anyway it now seems we have the International 420, the Laser Performance re-rigged Club 420 which is 10 kilos lighter (big deal?) and the Rondar Turbo 420 which may have an assy rig. Hey, why not produce a few more varients? It is not as if there aren't enough similar dinghys to choose from. You could even strap a couple of hulls together and call it the 420 V-Twin

You have to understand the american school and college scene to understand their requirement for these bizarre-to-us 420 variants.

Quite agree with the sentiment of the article and do like the direct American expression of view found further down in the supporting articles: "...until the Club 420 evolved into the sturdy but heavy pigs sailed today"
If motor racing had the same culture as sailing, people would still racing around the TT circuit on single cylinder Norton's. As a specific observation why do solos sail with 5kg of weight in them? And don't tell me it's about keeping old boats competitive - the introduction of FRP broke that link, so go the whole way and make sailing more fun. |
