Well you shouldn't launch unless you feel you and your equipment are up to it. If I was an insurance company I think I'd run a hard line on claims through stupidity!

At what level of wind would an insurance company refuse to pay out for damage?? (if you deliberately went out in a howler)

I think that the majority of people like to verge on the side of exaggerated when discussing wind speeds.

When we were at Weymouth for the nationals this year, racing was canned on the final day as it was blowing 30knots plus all day. This was severely windy, no one apart from the smallest sailed windsurfers were out on the water. There was a gust of 52 knots which caused utter carnage. Boats blown over which were tied down, a double stacker of cherubs was blown through the air (i am talking rolling and bouncing across the dinghy park), Boats strapped down on road bases were moving across the car park, and oppy sailors were being blown about!

This gust probably lasted 20 seconds and caused a serious amount of damage but then dropped back to 25-35 knots. All I can say is that if you've experienced 50+ knots then you'll have known about it... if you think you have, then you'll be suprised when you actually do experience it! and the last place you'll want to be is anywhere near the water on a boat!

When I used to go sailing the instructor would cleave me in 2 before rubbing salt water in the wounds and waking me 10 minutes before I went to bed......but if you tell the young people of that today they wouldn't believe you!!!!!
