Looks like it's going to be breeze on this weekend.  Who's doing what and where?

We're going to try to train from Lym, but if we get the same conditions as saturday last weekend, it'll probably be a bad idea.  It's gets very hectic near hurst Castle with wind against tide, but we still managed to get a decent session in (even if we did wipeout a fair few times. 49ers just can't take big wind and waves....)

Oh no! I've got go out with my brother in a 400 so he can learn rudderless sailing (his dinghy instructor assement next weekend!), and with 30kts it could be quite a 'experience'!

Dare I say it ... finally some Windsurfing weather!

Rudderless isnt a requirement to become an instructor but the people who run the courses in suffolk still make you do it as a requirment, therefore we have to do it.

No, Dont think I'll be doing that if the 30 knts comes. I'll take my camera instead!

( Probably my turn for RO or Safety anyway! )

after last nights antics and a 5 oclock bed time (in an extreamly drunken state) i awoke today with the refreshing thourgt of going windsurfing (whilst tryin to convince myself i will feel better for it later on. i got to the club early afternoon and spotted stu in his new cherub sailing with his brother. apparently he had oly just launched the boat and i hadnt missed much. with an audience on the shore including myself watching stu and his brother showing everyone how to sail. or should i say how to swim around a boat. he must have capsized 20 times in 30minuets sailing. if there was ever an award for most capsizes then stu should have it!! however looked fast when it was going.

wenrt racing today in the merlin, racing got abandoned 20 mins into the first race due to mentally strong winds, we managed to ram the mast foot at least 5 or 6 cm into the mast cracking it for a good foot above that. attempting to sail in with the mast damaged under just the jib was very difficult and resulted in lots of swimming and bruising, eventually had to furl the jib and walk the boat back along the bank in a capsied position as we couldnt make any headway against the wind witht the boat upright,

there was only 2 boats out of 20 odd who managed to sail all the way in a laser and a topper.

It was blowing a 7 at King George and was actually considering the cherub . We settled for the reefed 3000 and we went out for a blast. We were doing pretty well and then we popped the kite and had monumental kite run down the lake. Pulled off a few gybes and ditched it in on the last one. We sailed back up for another run popped the kite and started to head back in when a HUGE gust hit us out of nowhere and we pitch poled.

I though we would just let the gust blow through but it just didn't stop. 3-4 foot waves on a lake! We couldn't even right the boat so we had drop the main in a capsized position and after a few attempts to sail in we just drifted in on our side. It took about 20 minuets.

It's a shame I don't have a GPS, we were going pretty god damn quick!

sounds good george, the only thing which is slightly confusing me is how a barometer can record wind speed?

wish i could have taken my 6 out today but is still dont have a rudder blade and there was no water. also i suspect i would have spent more time flying round the forestay than sailing. im starting to envy all you puddle sailors who have nice flat water all the time. hey ho waves make it interesting.

You don't have to worry about people telling you that you can't go sailing during the week or when it's windy.

Flat water is good .... But it runs out quickly!

We had ripples on the lake today ..... Apart from when the hail decided to put in an appearance in one of the many 30+ knt gusts! Solid walls of ice flying into you while your trying to do safety .... That Hurts!!!

...

But not as much as having to pay Topper to make you a oneoff rudder gantry

why not get a cherub sailor to do it for you? you might just get a half decent product then.

and george the major problem is the lack of a rudder blade at the moment, and fear of breaking the boat again is also a pretty large factor.

Stuff that find a friendly metal shop and ask them nicely (reinforced with offers of lots of pints of the brown stuff) and you should get one made up pretty well.

I agree with Paul here, find an engineering shop and they will sort one out. By the looks of it, its only going to require a bit of cutting and welding. Maybe pre buy a crate of beer and take it in with you... most of the guys I know won't be able to say no by that point!

I think that the majority of people like to verge on the side of exaggerated when discussing wind speeds.

When we were at Weymouth for the nationals this year, racing was canned on the final day as it was blowing 30knots plus all day. This was severely windy, no one apart from the smallest sailed windsurfers were out on the water. There was a gust of 52 knots which caused utter carnage. Boats blown over which were tied down, a double stacker of cherubs was blown through the air (i am talking rolling and bouncing across the dinghy park), Boats strapped down on road bases were moving across the car park, and oppy sailors were being blown about!

This gust probably lasted 20 seconds and caused a serious amount of damage but then dropped back to 25-35 knots. All I can say is that if you've experienced 50+ knots then you'll have known about it... if you think you have, then you'll be suprised when you actually do experience it! and the last place you'll want to be is anywhere near the water on a boat!

At what level of wind would an insurance company refuse to pay out for damage?? (if you deliberately went out in a howler)

Well you shouldn't launch unless you feel you and your equipment are up to it. If I was an insurance company I think I'd run a hard line on claims through stupidity!

I agree that most people do exagerrate but also many anenometers tend to undereread that sort of gust - I say that from experience of sustained F10 breeze at sea.

We defiantly registered a constant 7 and King George.

I am somewhat suspicious of the 50 knot claim. As Tim said, at the cherub nats we had a 52 knot gust that pick up a fully loaded double stacker, completed several mid air flips narrowly missing Tim's head and it landed in a row boats.

I can assure you that it did happen! I even got a cut on my head from somewhere! I think there are pics of the destruction as 2 boats almost got sawn in half by the ropes they were tied down with, the stacker finished its gymnastic tumble upside down... and wait for it... a Boss got blown off its trailer!!!

I also saw an oppy sailer get blown over when he was holding his sail and get dragged about on his face... still not sure whether it was right to have laughed!

Yes - And the club anenometer no doubt said 52kts - but did this happen all over the boat park?  If so the wind was probably significantly more at the trailer itself.

It's going to be windy again this weekend . Not like last weekend though.

eh? why would the wind at the trailer be more than at the anenometer? bearing in mind these are usually at the highest point of the club.

Tack'ho - what I',m getting at is that in extreme conditions an anenometer on the club will give a reading on strong and high level wind with potentially few interruptions - but that compression of airflow elsewhere in gusts, over sea walls and around objects can create very localised condiions of the kind described with trailers rolling etc.  Those gusts can be much higher than what is being read.

Also the assumption that anenometers on for example clubs are getting a good reading can be false.  In the kind of conditions described the area of turbulent flow as the wind blows over the obstruction can extend a significant height upwards - and therefore the usual situation of an overread compared to breeze on the water can actually be inverted.

Yup, and northerly, so we at WWSC would have to get off a lee shore and make it all the way over to the other side before any respite..  But would be able to get back onto our trollies and back up the ramp without putting them in the water.

Marvellous !!!

Sorry I could be wrong. Maybe westerly at . Just loads of falling over then. Or more likely a cup of tea in the clubhouse laughing at the "talent" on the water.

Good breeze today. Twinning it and absolutely caning it ! It's a shame I injured my boat. Stuck my trapeze hook through the side tank getting back in after a capsize. Fairly decent sized whole I have to fix now. Slightly tore the kite as well.

Yeh! Good fun!!

Had the Vareo out for the morning, with the new sails!!

Certainly looks a lot different .. And feels a lot quicker with a kite thats got some shape!!!

But of course ... Upwind in a Vareo hurts ... So why bother sailing it flat!!

I was checking for weed!! Honest!!!!!!

Not really the boats fault. Spinnaker got caught on a shackle that I stupidly forgot to tape up. Both of those things could happen to any one in any boat with a spinnaker and a trapeze.

Dreaming of fixing the boat, no. Upgrading it and making it go FASTER, YES!

Indeed.

TT - I didnt even TRY going upwind on the Grafham day .. Reached off the shore, Reached back etc etc etc

The few times I did try going upwind, It was closer to a close reach with the main almost flogging!

The new sails make a hell of a difference, Downwind was much quicker .. And I got planing much quicker than I would have done with the old kite.

Upwind - Main is much more powerfull ... Hence the heel in that pic It wasnt like that for the whole beat .. Honest!!
