Hi all, Having been reading through the topic. Anybody know how the 762 will perform against boats like the corby's 25 (.950 approx) ,26 (IRC .960) or 29 (IRC .986)? i am trying to find a new boat to put into a mixed IRC fleet and would love any comments you guys have. Many thanks, B |

tim, wont be making it to felixstowe, not enough time on our hands! Braftery, we race regulary against a corby 25 at mersea and a 29 in burnham, good racing but corby boats are better designed for irc, so their rating is favourable. a 762 will be ahead of a 25 over the water but to beat it on handicap would have to be a fair way ahead. the 29 should do a horizon job, races more liek a 35ft boat! hope that helps. |

Hi there, Thanks very much for the information. Your right about the Corby 29, I was sailing on an X332 and it was nearly impossible to stay ahead of the 29. Have any of you sailed against J-80's in an IRC fleet ? if so any comparisons in performance would be appreciated. The reason for the questions is that I am trying to influence my local fleet to look at boats of similiar IRC ratings. This takes time and one of the newest additions to the fleet is a Corby 26, so I am looking at boats that have similiar ratings and that perform to the rating but are less costly to buy. Not an easy task ! Thanks again, Brian |

I've sailed against a J80 in IRC for about a season now. Compared to the projection, we've found we're quicker upwind in light to medium airs (before we have to change down to the #3) but if the angles suit it thrashes us offwind. They're much better sailors than us which skews the results a bit but we've never beaten them, despite often getting ahead of them upwind. I got a projection to race IRC because it was the best boat for the job that fitted my very limited budget! It's a pretty good IRC performer as sportsboats go but nowhere near as good as a proper IRC machine. If I had the money, I'd be sailing a Corby. |

So would I! But just because of the Inboard diesel the sea toilet and better accomodation. They have interesting performance on the water. They get to a certain speed and stick to it. Due to their ballast weight and narrow waterline beam design they just do no plane like a Projection or lighter sportsboats. (they were never ment to I guess for good IRC rating reasons) However they are quick for their size and we do have a battle to beat them on IRC due to a heavy handicap (because IRC rates out planing hulls) When the going gets to about Force five I know who has the most fun and biggest grins down wind though! We are planing whilst they are creating a Tsunami with the amount of water they are pushing around! Edited by brys |

I can't really comment about IRC because on the Forth we use a PY based system, however we regularly sail against both a Corby 29 and a J80. For statistical info go to http://www.fyca.org.uk/ and look at FYCA handicap list 2008. It is one of the most comprehensive databases of boat performance apart from the RYA's. The Corby 29 is named 'Henceforth' and the J80 is 'Flint 2'. We are P762 'Hobbes Express'. Given moderate conditions the Corby is often soon a dot on the horizon, but in lighter stuff and heavier stuff we can often catch them... They have had some crewing issues, though. However I still think that on windward/ leeward courses (without any reaching) we are a match for the J80, and this year we have been doing well against them. On windier days both Corby and J-boat look like a bit of a handful; the Projection lives for wind! We were briefly joined by a brand-new Corby 29 'Jezebel 2', but after a serious broach under spinnaker during practice the boat was driven onto the rocks and sank shortly after. Crew were shaken up but fine. It lasted a total of two weeks from delivery... |
