Chic, I bought a Pentex Jib from Steve Goacher about 3 years ago and it is a fantastic sail, flat and controllable and still in excellent condition, despite being tested in more wind that I care to think about (no wind instruments so I can't give numbers). I found him very friendly and helpful, and he knows the Projection well. I have just bought a kevlar Main, kevlar 130% Genoa and a 50sqm kite from him. We've only been using them for a few weeks but they are very well made and so far I am very very happy. The kite is a deep runner and I still have my 44 sqm Hyde, which is very flat and reaches incredibly well if we need it. I'm surprised others havn't had the same experience as me, but I can't speak too highly of his sails and service.

Interestingly. I decreased the genoa by about 1.5 sq m and increased the kite by 6sqm and the IRc went up 1 click.

Kev.

Does anyone know of a good supplier of carbon tubing?? We broke our pole on Sunday in gusty conditions...

I don't have anything bad to say about Steve Goacher, he's been incredibly helpful and friendly, and, myself being a sometime Sonata sailor as well as the P762 I have always found him willing to dispense helpful advice at Sonata events where I have spoken to him.

I have to explain we didn't order the Goacher pentex sails for our boat (they were ordered by the boat's previous owner), but... the genoa doesn't reach the deck and consequently seems to be missing the most important part of the sail. The Wichard hook for the tack is too small and it's always a struggle to rig. Similarly the head has so much webbing that it is virtually imposible to attach a shackle. The main pulls out of the track regularly and I had to fit a slug slide to the head, which unfortunately doesn't do its job properly because - in my opinion - the headboard is attached too close to the boltrope. I have thought of a solution but I have to rely on favours to be allowed into our local loft where I used to work to make the changes. Having said that the main is a great shape and powerful too. I have mentioned these problems to Steve and he has promised to look at photos of the genoa when I send them - not something he has any obligation to do.

I'm glad to hear that other people's Goacher sails work well, but I also wish that ours did too!

Hi Chic

Our carbon pole is made by C spars. I'm terrified of breaking it -how did you break yours?

And talking of breakages, we broke our pulpit at the weekend. The body of the pulpit pulled of the central post above the nav light - it seems that hiking hard has caused it to go. Irritating, but the local stainless guy is going to be able to fix it for now and strengthen it when it's out of the water.

It's very easy! you power up the kite on a tight reach before the guy has been secured and it breaks over the forestay... I'm not happy.

We've had some great downwind sailing recently, though. 14knots seems quite commonplace!

Sorry to hear about your pulpit breakage, Tim.

I managed to break our pole last winter , I repaired it with a nice length of 1mm ally tube sleeved inside the carbon ( and a layer of pvc tape to stop electrolosis  ? ) , and then glassed up on outside , don't look too pretty but it works , only a little heavier . I also have old sail battens taped to pole in rig impact areas to spread the load when they do hit the rig . Once you look for them there are lots of boats with repaired poles out there . I also have a z spars ally pole which we use with the assy ... the carbon pole looks like a banana at times using this sail , we do have a strop well fwd on pole ... there is a lot of load .
We are now gybing assy without problem , thanks to advice from this column , no big winds as yet though which will make it more interesting I'm sure .
Have ordered a J80 pulpit , about £200 plus vat inc carriage which don't seem to bad to me for something bright that fits a yacht !

Doug .

We've got the pulpit fixed and are going to have it braced over the winter. I suppose that's what we get for hiking like we mean it! Also in discussion with Quantum - new #1, mainsail and (bigger!) kite for next season.

Been light airs racing every weekend for the last little while and we're slowly starting to work out how to do it properly. Got racing right up until 2nd dec. Below is a pic of us last weekend in the gorgeous october sun!

Tim, maybe you could share some of what you've learned light airs sailing? We still find it difficult to get the boat moving, particularly downwind, although overall I think we're improving. We've had some reasonable results in non-planing conditions recently.

Thanks to a skiff-sailing friend (and carbon enthusiast) who lives locally I'm close to having a repaired pole for next weekend... I'm pricing the cost of a new number 1 at the moment since we don't really have a really good headsail. Maybe D4 carbon?

We may also be sailing against a second Projection 762 here soon, I'm waiting to hear whether a fellow club-member has decided to go ahead yet. You may be able to guess which boat we're talking about it...

Tim,

Good photo, you look nicely powered up with boom on centre-line.  What size kite and #1 genoa are you thinking of and what IRC are you expecting?

As mentioned in an earlier post, I am planning to raise the spinnaker hoist and Steve Goacher is recommending 50sqm kite, which should put us at 0.970.

Garth

We haven't learnt anything groundbreaking in light airs and are still
struggling downwind. The things we've reinforced are obvious really but
we've found that putting somebody down below (short straw) really forward
and to leeward helps. We sail nicely free to keep the speed on which seems
to pay against the guys who point up in the light stuff. We've tried softening
our halyards even more than normal with some success too. But the biggest
difference is me putting my wetsuit on and jumping in the water quite often
before racing!

We're dropping our headsail to 145% and going with a 45sqm kite. We rate
0.972 at the moment and will probably go up a point or two.
