Acutally Bumble if you read the data the new highest rate (the £210 rate) only applies to vehicles registered on or after March 23rd 2006.

Persoanlly I would have applied it to all registered since 2001 as they have all the required data. There are far too many 'wannabe' 4x4 drivers out there who have no good reason for having a 4x4 aside from as a status symbol.

BTW in your quest for a car that will tow a boat at 60MPH (boat size I am assuming a Scorpion as you love them) I towed one from Peterborough to Tenby a few years back for the Nationals and had no problems at all. I then towed it to Devon after the nats and then back home a week later following the Fireball nats. No problems at all 60MPH was comfortable.

Tax rate for that car £110 a year (on a 2.0 HDi).

Peruvian Earthworms for PM!!

Oh yes, why has so much been spent on the health service - record amounts, but hospitals are laying off staff that the country has got qualified, who then seek jobs in hospitals overseas so other countries get the benefit of our doctors that our taxpayers have got qualified, only then for the govement to employ people from overseas (and not so wealthy economies which have a poorer education system) to work of the NHS. Sounds like the govement is in the export business. I wonder what kick backs they're getting? Well, since the party treasurer didn't even know he had loans financing his parties activities there be no chance on find out on this one.

About time the biggest monoploy in the country had corporate governence to proctect the man in the street - and that is the business of politics.

To be fair though you wouldn't get me turning up for my job for free. In that sense I'm in it for what I can get out of it!

True, but I do expect a level of alturism from anyone in public office when you consider a large number of politicians make a considerble amount of cash on their expenses.  In my mind expenses are a recommence not a benefit.  They have consitantly voted themselves above inflation pay rises and pension benfits whilst at the same time telling the rest of the public sector that their isn't enough cash for their demands.  Now although I can tolerate this sort of behaviour in the private sector I wish those in power felt that is was a privlege to lead us not  a privlege for us to be led by them.  To be fair their are still some politicans who do believe that but they are a dying breed.

I knew one of the more controversial New Labour figures slightly for a while (I worked on some of his land) {your typical hard up working class labour politician then}and I would have to say that although most of my prejudices about politicians attitudes were reinforced he seemed to be a perfectly nice and straight guy, and no more untrustworthy than other senior managers in large public and private companies I've come across (i would trust them either).

I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

I heard a great theory about politicians.  Anyone who actually wants to be one should be instantly barred from ever holding office, it would appear that most of them are in their jobs for what they can get out of it, grace and favour flats, claiming 40 grand to pay the interest on a 30 grand morgatge over 3 years anyone?  What makes the current lot worst is the high handed way in which they preach at us whilst being up to their arms in the cookie jar, frankly i wouldn't pi?~ on them if they were on fire.

I think I need to get involved. I don't mind if people don't like me as long as there is a reason for it!! It just needs someone to go in and shake the system up a bit. In the american case I think that Arni is the man to go for it. The state of California has very strict rules on a lot of things involving cars and emmisions etc. It is generally there where they start and then they get filtered elsewhere (or so i heard).

Exactly right!  If the government simply tweak everything that's currently going on, they can then stand up and say "ooooo look we've made that a little bit better" but if they do anything drastic which would actualy make a real difference then they risk upsetting a large faction of people.  And yes possibly wouldnt get voted in for the next term, and no government party wants to take a salary decrease, even if it does end up being for the good of the country.

Sadly the government wont take the time to really listen unless we force them to listen.  Potential protest time me thinks....

Ah well, that was the role of the Monarch and the House of Lords, whose powers have been greatly reduced in recent years.

I'm not competent to comment on political theory, but I remember my suprise when I read a book from the Eighteenth century commenting on how superior the then English system was to a pure democracy because of exactly those sorts of problems.

Just been cruising the DVLA site, is there any way of finding out the CO2 emmisions for specific cars?

I was under the impression that diesel cars were more economical because they generally returned a higher MPG. I noted a definite trend in increasing diesel prices when the car manufacturers shifted to a bias on diesel cars... I have a 1.9 Diesel clio which has about 60bhp (same as a base petrol) so its not fast, and i have to pay more tax than if i had the 1.8 16v petrol model?!

There is a lot I could say about the current government but IN MY OPINION it is something that should be said about ALL politicians. They're crafty little buggers with their only interest is in being re-elected. I think a system needs to be brought in which forces them to do what they think is 'right' for the good of the people and country rather than trying to secure their job. Perfect example is in the USA, where (unless they are completely stupid) they can see the long term benfits of signing the Kyoto agreement (which i also wouldn't rule out), but no one has the balls to stand up and do anything about it because they won't be voted in next time round. WHY does this happen?!

Its called taxing the poor !!!!! , if you are too poor to buy a new car you pay more tax , simple !!!!

When the emission related duties came in they listed all engine numbers of cars and models that would get better rates , then abitarily decided to do it by date of registration , so both my wifes car and mine had exactly same spec as those eligible but taxed higher . I wrote to Vehicle excise bampots pointing this out , but guess what they didn't even bother to reply !

Well done GB & TB guess whose not gitting my votes (and for many other reasons)

They will be bring back extra tax on boats next !
