Projection 762 Help please?

   Wow Doug! That sounds amazing. Glad to hear the boat stood up to the conditions well.
And that is plenty of water! We often get a bit below in heavy conditions but never too much. We have a manual bilge pump on board, I guess you do too. The pump is on the port quarter at the back and has a moveable hose down below. We tend to leave the hose so that its opening is down on the starboard side. That way, when the pump is on the high side the water should be down near the pipe inlet so we can pump out if necessary. Sponging out is never easy, I have to force my arms down inside the lockers and under the floor to get the last of it out. Careening helps too!
As for a pulpit, the stainless guy at our marina makes loads of custom stainless things. He made our chainplates and recently fitted some custom stanchion braces for us. See http://www.mrstainless.co.uk - and they could always take measurements off my boat if that's any use.

	Thanks Tim. Yes , the boat was fine . I will put another reef line in for next season , the second reef would have made things a little easier I'm sure . I will also move bilge pump pipe as you suggested , we could have cleared a lot of the water that way I think . I just didn't realise how much water we had taken til we got back to harbour . I'm going to see if I can fit a rubber seal of sorts at fwd end of hatch area , may be able to stop some water entering here . Thanks for the link to your stainless guy , looked at his website , will give him a call if the contact I have up here falls thro , thanks also for the offer of just copying yours . Its our last proper regatta of the season this weekend , not a lot of wind f'cast , should be fun though ... I think I have a full crew list ... they do however have a habit of not turning up now and then ! Doug .

	No worries Doug. Can't recommend the stainless guy enough, does a great job and very reasonable prices too so at least you have an option if your other contact falls through. My season expenses continue - new boom went on last week....

	Did the old one break ?, in my boats history there is a mast and a couple of booms listed , there may have been more , I don't know . Before the windy race ( we were f'cast up to an 8 but they are often wrong ) I put an extra couple of turns on the caps as I've read that the mast likes to be tight in a blow, had no probs but didn't get chance to use kite .Left backstay quite tight off wind . 	The kicker came off the old one in a big way - ripped the rivets out, distorted the fitting and stripped the track off the bottom. It'd had a kicker failure in the past and, as we needed a new end fitting too, the advice was it'd be cheaper to replace than repair. It wasn't as expensive as I'd feared so we're pretty happy! Probably a good call keeping that backstay on - first time we raced Upstart in 30kts we went around the windward mark on to a dead run, hoisted the symmetric and as the backstay was being eased the forestay began to bow in a big way so we put it back on quite a bit. Seems you need it to keep the rig in the boat!

	Hi Chaps, Have been getting a few quotes for a new kite, code 2, 45sqm. We are thinking about raising the hoist up the mast by about 50cm, which worked very well for Pink Gin this season. Has anyone else done similar and does anyone have any experience with .90oz vs .75oz spinnaker on a Projection. Garth

	My Pulpit was scrunched by a Dehler 38 a while ago. I got a J80 pulpit off the shelf for half the price I was quoted to copy the original. You have to move a couple of holes but its better made, sturdier and available if it breaks again. Also, it does not include the forestay fitting, so mangling your pulpt doesn't endnger his rig. If you're looking for sails, speak to Steve Goacher, I just got some new ones from him, they are very very good, and he's not at all expensive. Kev.

	Hi Garth, In my experience 0.9oz spinnaker cloth would normally only be used for a small heavy weather kite on a boat of this size. Given that you are going for a reasonably large kite, 45sqm, I would go for .75oz cloth. The heavier cloth would make it more difficult to fly in light winds. I don't know if anyone else uses heavier?? All our symmetrical kites are .75oz and no real issues even in strong winds - most damage tends to happen when hoisting and dropping. If you're going to raise the hoist (I know this doesn't make it masthead but it's worth reading Nigel Theadom's comments earlier in this strand) do it before you order the kite - it'll make a big difference to the sailmaker. I'm curious to know more about your Goacher sails, Kev - we've had some problems with ours and consequently I'm thinking about replacing them.

	My Boat at present is all Hyde sails . I had a jib from Goacher on my last boat , not really impressed , forgot to put a window in and didn't last long . When i ordered a new jib localy the Goacher was looked at and it was well out of spec and too full in the head . Some boats up here have a lot of good words for Goacher but some are not so sure , I seem to recall a new Cork jib falling apart . I have ordered a new main and no.1 from a local sailmaker who has recently started working for himself , he has made me sails before, when he worked in a local loft, I couldn't rate him high enough. . . fantastic attention to detail , he's sailed with us a couple of times to get feel of boat and see how the Hydes perform , he wants another sail in more breeze soon , he has a new sailcloth in mind also , I'll let you know how we come on . I'm sure I won't be disappointed . I'm having a look at J80 pulpits ... thanks , Doug .

	Our Goacher sails have been excellent, great shape , well made and fast. Personally I like a sailmaker who has made a few projection sails in the past with some sucess, hence Goacher, Quantum Hyde etc. Go 60 cm up with the hoist, fit a dinghy sized but all stainless steel ball bearing sheave block in the mast so the hole cut is small, use 8mm halvard. Should allow spinaker luff length increase to 9.8m . Combine with IRC area of 45-46m^2 gives a good aspect ratio for reaching and enough power to plane early. Mast will be fine,tested to 35 knots. We found Goacher spi fuller than Quantum, so better going deep but lees good on a tight reach. You pays your money........
