Dennis - its due to the 49ers UBER stability which will slow it down. Think about it - two boats carrying the same area BUT one is over 3 times the weight of the other one and much much wider on the water line. Which will be faster? ps - have you ever come close to 31.2 knots? HAHAHAHAHA Can we close this now dude? |

If you put smaller flatter sails on the 49er it will be faster around the course and have a higher top end speed when the breze is up. if you are talking light wind speed then big sails will win but who really cares? its light wind. If you are talking breeze up speed then over large over deep sails will slow you down.
Have you in anything other than a power boat? |

If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right

Hehe, yer - this is the speed it reached in Norfolk in a 45 knot squall at Weymouth a couple of years back The race officer was also one of the weymouth speed week guys and invited me back to compete, but I had sold the boat by then! Ill never reach those speeds again - and to be honest, was brikkin it a bit at the time!! |

Reckon we would have been close to it on a Tornado one time when we were out in above a F6 and in comparision, the 49er going down-wind seemed quicker but that's probably more due to the sensation of speed you get from a mono compared to a cat. The 9er is going to be a lot more stable than the 12, granted, but the lack of stability on the 12 is what I see will be its down point. Remember Julian Bethwaite spent a lot of time designing and getting the 9er right, the sails are pretty well suited to the boat and in general she seems really efficient until very high winds where the high sail area and big rig are creating high drag which eats into the power generated by it. If we knocked the wings off my boat and tried to sail it in windier conditions, we'd stand very little chance and that's the sort of point I'm coming from with the 12 because the width of the 12 is comparible to the 9er with no wings.

I would side with dennis on this one. It is all about leaverage upwind and the 49er has that. the cherub or 12 might have it down wind much smaller lighter boat (more fun one thinks).but I THINK the 49er would win round the course. andy I know there was not much wind at Keilder last year but the 49er we were in was legs ahead of you! We should put the 49er 12, cherub and i14 up against each other like the 700 and musto's did last year at the tide ride..... that stoped all the talk and sent the 700 sailers away with there tails between there legs

True, though I'd hesitate to draw too many conclusions from one event - one swallow does not a summer make and all that. |
