RS seem to have now changed their published hull weight for the RS200. They are now quoting the "fitted hull weight" @ 88 KGS.

Not sure when they changed over from publishing the unfitted hull weight but a good move non the less.

That seems a far more honest way to go about things .... only taken them, what, 20 years to change it from the published figure of 72kg ...

In fairness, given this is dinghy sailing and no 'standard' exists, it's probably more accurate to state that it's taken them 20 years to work out the weight they put on that document was without fittings, re-weigh one and get round to updating the document Wink

The Phantom hull weight includes all fittings, centreboard ropes etc but excludes mast boom and rudder. So pretty much all inclusive but with carbon mast etc it cant add much overall.

I seem to remember that when I originally asked the sales guy about hull weight of the 200 he did have to go and ask someone on the shop floor.

I am an old git with a dodgy back and from my perspective an all up weight would be helpful.

This is pure speculation but I suspect that when the 200 was launched  the main competitor was the L2 so they made a big fuss about it being a light weight boat. It now transpires that the L2 is a lighter boat anyway......as it happens we've now gone back to the L2 because it's more fun on the sea and it's got a spinny that functions much better IMO.....oh, and the missus prefers dangling.

It's probably not the case but it would be nice to think that this thread helped RS make a decision about what weight to publish.

Will RS follow the Aero with a 2 sailed ultralight, easy to sail double hander with choice of rigs? Published hull weight 40kg?

I think they've got a better proposition for the 'multi-handed' market... launching in association with the Sea Scouts.

Something I've missed? I'd have thought the Venture would have been an ideal Scout boat.

a lightweight double hander with choice of rigs that could take two 100kg crew down to two 50kg crew.

say 14ft long, wide like a merlin, self tacking jib, small rig unstayed, medium rig stayed hiking, large rig with trap, and a large rig for fattys to hike, all separate classes and not trying to repeat the rs800 situation.  4 boats one hull all bases covered, potential to even sail single handed.

I think you are asking too much of one hull shape there, Oli - the underwater volume would change dramatically with anything from 100kg to 200kg on board (200kg would be more than 4x hull weight), and with a flare Merlin style hull, the wetted surface would be a nightmare. A round section hull with little flare would cope better, but would still have rocker problems.

I think you have a whole list of incompatible requirements there...

RS QUEST - press release will probably hit the front page in the next 24 hours I'd have thought.

It's in the public domain anyway- joint iniative with the sea scouts.  First glance looks pretty nice for what it's trying to do.  I can't imagine the forum chateratti will say much, other than the obvious USP - rigged for either Asymmetric or Symmetric kite.

Kind of goes a little On -Topic here- being the first Symmetric dinghy from RS
