Would I suggest the "one race nationals" approach for a new class? No. Would I, from outside the class, suggest that I 14s are "wrong" to run such a thing? Definitely not.

The Forteens have been racing at Castle Cove S.C. since Wednesday and completed seven races other the the P.O.W. Cup.
There were four trophies, one for each day's pair of races and a further trophy for the overall series winner. Glen and Sam won the series and two of the daily cups in addition to the P.O.W. Cup.

I personally think that there is a lot of romance in a single race nationals but only really where it is backed up by getting your name on the same trophy as Uffa Fox, having sailed under the same terms as him many decades previously. It is also very tough to stay lucky for half an hour in a modern 14, let alone for 2h plus, as I know from experience!
Of course "proper" regatta sailors will rightly assign more value to a series result emphasizing consistency, and this is pretty much the case in the i14s, but the POW race is one of the things that makes the i14 so special and compelling.
However the way things are going with the increasing dumbing down of week long nationals into long weekends (people being to poor and busy), the one race nationals could be the way things are going!

Of course next week in San Francisco amongst other things Canoes will race for the New York Canoe Club Trophy, first competed for in 1886, which also has Uffa Fox' name on it, but is a seriously old trophy, not a 20thC Johnny-come-Lately like the 14s POW cup...

Rather newer is the Trophy on offer for winning the UK Canoe Championships, a mere youngster from 1899, and names on that include both Uffa Fox and Linton Hope.
