Oh, just back from the Belgian Finn Nationals and everyone got a prize.  A large bottle of Belgian beer  Smile  Of course the prize giving was a longish affair but worth the waiting Wink

I know someone who had so many glasses, mugs etc sitting in his loft that he gave them back to his club to use as future prizes.  He would never have given bottles of wine back however  Wink

We give out vouchers that can either be redeemed at a local chandlery or against next year's membership subscriptions.

Well, in my house we don't drink the stuff, so the substantial numbers of bottles of wine we get given just go out again as raffle prize donations or whatever. Sadly few (sailing or dog) club budgets appear to stretch to bottles of single malt (the less peaty varieties please, I like Glengoyne a lot, but really know v little about the subject) which would go down well hereabouts.

We normally give out some form of glassware, such as an engraved whisky tumbler, wine glass or pint mug, along with a bottle of wine and if you won an event then you get the club trophy to keep for the year with your name engraved on it.

For people who have won more than one prize we have given out vouchers instead of wine so that they dont have to carry 8 bottles of wine home!!!!

It is tricky though. Those who have won infrequently like the glassware and the wine, while those who win lots are fed up with yet more glasses and bottles of wine, so a balance needs to be found.

At WSC we gave out engraved glassware until people had it spilling out of their lofts.

We then switched to chandlery vouchers for a few years, then when people seemed to have had enough of them we switched to bone china mugs with the club flag, the year and a map of the river on them, also well-received.

Whatever you choose, I think you need to change every few yeares to keep things fresh.

Wine tends to be given along with the major perpetual trophies that have to be returned to the club.

We have annual trophies but to keep we have pottery dishes, of different sizes and with the club logo. This worked well for a few years.

I thought of doing something like placemats (the club could also sell them for a bit of income...)

At my club I suspect we're the same as many others, ie we give annual (engraved) trophies plus a small keepsake such as a smaller trophy or glass. For opens and one offs we give annual trophies and sailing kit from our local chandlers. Not sure this is particularly motivating, as others have said the regular winners have cupboards full of the stuff. We used to hand out bottles on wine for club one off events, eg pursuits, and that was pretty popular.

At the phantom nats there are trophies for the winner and race winners but the best prizes of new gear sometimes including rudders, etc, are awarded down the fleet as spot prizes. In that way the best stuff goes to the not so good at sailing. Otherwise all the best hear goes to the best and they already have whether through prizes or sponsorship. Oh and you can't have a prize unless you attend the prize giving either.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest
