Not dinghy development, more club development!

What do peoples club normally give out at the end of year laying up/prize giving?
Tropheys? Vouchers? Alcohol? Boat parts? A warm fuzzy feeling?

Cheers then

All the clubs I've been at have given out the trophies you have to give back, then either glasses with things engraved or small plaque like trophiesthat moulder in a drawer until being thrown away 20 years later.

If you are arranging things, see if you can do something more original. Maybe a small framed photo of the winner's boat, or a great scene from the club, or something locally bottled - I dunno, something that shows that thought has gone into it all. I totally failed to manage this when I was doing it - club politics got in the way, but if I was unfortunate enough to be doing it again, I'd try harder.

Its damn tricky. The people who won prizes all the time would rather have bottles pf good booze or something- I know of one sailor's house where every glass and half the crockery are engraved/printed. OTOH I still resent that the one time I won a prize at the Nationals the prizes had been forgotten and I have nothing physical for wjat was a big deal for me...

This year I went to a combined laser and mirror open on the south coast which was the most expensive open by a LONG way and they only gave only gave a bottle of wine for first laser and gave nothing to the mirrors! And it was only a cheap bottle!

Attempting to organise it but getting shot down by the committee. Looking to show the committee what other clubs do and hopefully keep everyone happy!

Chandlers vouchers have been used at our club for a few years, and whats more I believe they will sell them to you at a "small" discount if you buy a reasonable amount.
I should add these can be used mail order as the nearest dinghy chandler is quite some distance away.

I also agree with Jim though, for those of us that don't win much it's quite nice to have a keepsake.

One of my clubs only gives out cups which have to be given back.
Not only that, the winner is responsible for getting it engraved.

It works fine.
We do have separate prize  givings for our regatta and one or two other events where the odd bottle of wine is given out.
The easter series is a stroke of genius, the prizes are given on the monday so eggs can be bought half price or less...

On the whole it is about recognition and getting your name on a trophy which goes on some other bugger's mantleshelf for years after.

When I've run championships (in a class that has multiple age groups and disciplines within each event) we've used fairly small trophies with little difference between the one that is given to the overall national champ and the one that goes to, say, third place in the Grand Master's marathon. We order a bunch of trophies and a bunch of little self-adhesive plaques with the relevant place and event engraved on the face; for example "third place, Masters marathon" or "second overall".

No one gets more than one trophy; if you win more than one award (for example, second overall, first master, first in slalom) you still get just one trophy but it has the three relevant plaques stuck on it. This can lead to some pretty frantic work for the race committee who have to stick 40 plaques onto 17 trophies or something between the final race and the presentation!

As noted earlier, the point is that those who are likely to win overall have plenty of other trophies at home. But to the guy who has turned up each year for a decade and finally scored a place in their age group, that result is something to be savoured and a symbol of that is important.

At club level from now on, our plan is to present something along the lines of a photograph of the sailor's boat in a wide frame, and the relevant plaques. Each boat will only get one photo, but at the end of every season if you win there'll be another plaque to stick on it. Again, the idea is that the club champion will have so many bits of tin that they'll be happy to just stick another plaque on the pic each year, but for the guy who has never won anything that one pic with one plaque will be something to savour - yet it will still be affordable for the class and that may allow some useful prizes (booze, kit, vouchers) to be given out as well.

At the phantom nats there are trophies for the winner and race winners but the best prizes of new gear sometimes including rudders, etc, are awarded down the fleet as spot prizes. In that way the best stuff goes to the not so good at sailing. Otherwise all the best hear goes to the best and they already have whether through prizes or sponsorship. Oh and you can't have a prize unless you attend the prize giving either.

At my club I suspect we're the same as many others, ie we give annual (engraved) trophies plus a small keepsake such as a smaller trophy or glass. For opens and one offs we give annual trophies and sailing kit from our local chandlers. Not sure this is particularly motivating, as others have said the regular winners have cupboards full of the stuff. We used to hand out bottles on wine for club one off events, eg pursuits, and that was pretty popular.

We have annual trophies but to keep we have pottery dishes, of different sizes and with the club logo. This worked well for a few years.

I thought of doing something like placemats (the club could also sell them for a bit of income...)

At WSC we gave out engraved glassware until people had it spilling out of their lofts.

We then switched to chandlery vouchers for a few years, then when people seemed to have had enough of them we switched to bone china mugs with the club flag, the year and a map of the river on them, also well-received.

Whatever you choose, I think you need to change every few yeares to keep things fresh.

Wine tends to be given along with the major perpetual trophies that have to be returned to the club.

We normally give out some form of glassware, such as an engraved whisky tumbler, wine glass or pint mug, along with a bottle of wine and if you won an event then you get the club trophy to keep for the year with your name engraved on it.

For people who have won more than one prize we have given out vouchers instead of wine so that they dont have to carry 8 bottles of wine home!!!!

It is tricky though. Those who have won infrequently like the glassware and the wine, while those who win lots are fed up with yet more glasses and bottles of wine, so a balance needs to be found.

Well, in my house we don't drink the stuff, so the substantial numbers of bottles of wine we get given just go out again as raffle prize donations or whatever. Sadly few (sailing or dog) club budgets appear to stretch to bottles of single malt (the less peaty varieties please, I like Glengoyne a lot, but really know v little about the subject) which would go down well hereabouts.

We give out vouchers that can either be redeemed at a local chandlery or against next year's membership subscriptions.

I know someone who had so many glasses, mugs etc sitting in his loft that he gave them back to his club to use as future prizes.  He would never have given bottles of wine back however Wink

Hmmmm, I may have to start sailing Finns. A bit hard at 74kg but enough bottles of Belgian beer will solve that!

My wife's cousin lives 1 mile from the Glengoyne distillery - it is a lovely whisky.

I have been lucky enough to accrue a decent selection of mugs and glasses, I think these make good prizes and much better than small trophies or 'medals' (plastic type).

They do have a down-side though, one I was particularly proud of, a 3rd place glass from a windy and freakin freezin winter series was in the hand of a non-sailing mate who is the owner of many a tacky sports trophy himself (cricket, running) who said "what did you bother keeping this one for, 3rd's a bit embarrassing isn't it" at which point, I offered to take him out in late January so he can join racing for the day and then let me know whether he'd be chuffed with a 3rd place mug, or not..... bloody fair-weather sports people !!

I  remeber one club on the Thames where prizes were pewter beer tankards with the name of the event and the winner engraved. The tankards then went behind the bar, and used for serving beer. The beer was all the better for being drunk while being remided who had won a race or regatta some time ago.

In a club in France all competitors got 2 bottles of wine - last boat got standard Bordeaux the winner a couple of bottles of a grand cru classé (of a good year naturellement). Class!

Most of the clubs in France give prizes to all competitors and normally, in wine regions, it's wine Wink

I did win a Magnum of Champagne once in Troyes (Champagne department) but can't remember what the rest got as prizes Big smile    I think that Ian Pinnell and his crew won a magnum each at that event in the 505 Clap

Our club gives out the glassware in the same way as it has four the last 20 odd years. Very useful at home.

For a while at our phantom open when I sorted the prizes 1st place got a bottle of 5 year old cider brandy, 2nd was 3 year old and the other placings got burrow Hill cider. Lovely local prizes and cost less than the glassware and appreciated more, especially by me as I won the event.

The cvrda returnable trophies are my favourite ones - all sorts of odd objects ranging from a painting and an I14 mastgate (funny no-one wants to win that) via a coppper nail in a piece of wood and a brass bell to a brass wingnut awarded for acts of what I can only describe as stupidity, such as our towing the mark when leading the fleet!

Nessa managed an excellent prizegving at the Nationals with all sorts of new odd prizes which didn't just reward top places - persistance with spinnaker for example and "more (boats) behind than in front" for the boat just over half way up the fleet.

Club prizes and a few cherished travelling ones keep the glasses cabinet full - as if I hadn't collected enough when Esso used to do glasses free with fuel! Now the club is looking at pottery mugs I believe.
