Dear 423zero,
I am think about buying a catamaran. I understand you are the guy to ask, which would you recommend for gentle family sailing at a lovely volunteer run club with lots of womenfolk who bake cakes afterwards? I have two options, one is a Unicorn, the other is an Inflatable Catapult. Which is most likely to get me Galley Duty? cheers, TT  or  |

I am liking the Unicorn and there being a little more room for the ladeez.
Anything Unicorn is cool at the moment as I understand it. Seems like a shoo-in to me. |

OK so back to one of the more serious thread drifts folks.....I was asked at the weekend if I wanted to go onto our club committee into the role of Vice Commodore. Now then based on the vitriolic posts on here I should probably decline on the basis that I am a mere 45 year old who races year round and furthermore my experience setting up and running a global company, volunteering as a school governor and various other non-exec roles on board should disqualify me if I take to heart most of the in depth and detailed analysis exposed by this wonderful forum.
Seriously though - has made me rethink!

it's the paddles on the bows isn't it.... a bit fifty shades. and take the role of vice commodore. It's almost like a press ganging when you don't stand for election, make a speech and get voted on by the entire membership who wouldn't miss an AGM for the world.... you will find your efforts well respected, honest.  |

Definitely do it, I don't regret my spell, I did get some good things done and at the end of the day put a bit back as the saying goes, not that I haven't contributed quite a bit over the years one way or another. The only problem if you have been 'the boss'in your real life, it's kind of difficult to cope when they won't do as they're told..

That will be ok - I am mega laid back, in fact only succeeded when I hired people around me to get stuff done because I am crap at it. The thing that worried me is that they want me to go from zero to VC in one jump....I mean surely there is some little role that I can do and if they like me I can take on a bigger role!

VC is actually whatever you, or the Commodore, want to make it, a job like secretary or treasure is far more onerous. Take it on with the agreement that you'll simply take up the slack when the Commodore is unavailable and accept a few small tasks while you learn about the way the club runs
