hence my reference to the 'equivalent experience' that our club states... come join us and you can do all the rib driving you want sam ![]() its all a bit smoke and mirrors really because i struggle to see duties being much part of any perceived (or otherwise) decline

We have a lot of Cyclists and Joggers round our lake, I have asked committee to print flyers to hand out, but no interest, suggested ad in local free paper for people to come and try messing about in boats, have a go at crewing, again no interest, they are of The build it they will come.

This all seems to suggest that driving the powerboat, or watching boats sailing around, whilst helping out other club members, who in turn will help you to get enjoyable, safe sailing/racing, is somehow an onerous task. I find it to be one of the most sociable things to do, and certainly end up getting to know my fellow duty dogs much better.
For some who rarely set foot on club soil, let alone get on the water, it can be a reminder that they joined for a reason. For others, it will be a terrible imposition. I'd suggest to them that maybe, just maybe, they should try using the local pay and play lake twice a year, rather than joining something called a club, with all that implies. As for regulars who whinge about doing duties, but are happy to turn up every week and make use of other people's time, there are no words. |

While some may mock Rupert's opinion for being out of touch with modern lifestyles, I feel he makes valid points.
There is I feel a risk of creating a loss of depth in knowledge and experience with a full pay and play model. Yes if you sail every week unimpeded my management or duty responsibilities you may sail and race to a higher level but will you be a better sailor? This is more to our game than being first to the windward mark. Some first principles can get lost, such as, the first rule of racing rules is to avoid contact, seamanship to look out for beginners or those in trouble. There is much to be learned from watching your fellow members when doing a duty of Committee boat or Safety. I would also suggest that the best safety boat crews and ROs come from current sailors.

But not *all* the current sailors. Its my observation that if there's a really king size stuff up on the committee boat it will probably be perpetrated by one of the club's best sailors. |
