Not mine (I'm way too heavy) but a recent acquisition by another of our forumites,

OK then - have a look - It is difficult to keep anything underwraps even when we test at odd times !

http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/david4780/HaloFirstSail#528348 7647205644802

Very early days and all we are doing initially currently is sorting out the unusual mast /main combination and making sure the over-rotation works as well as we have been told.  There may be some killer vices in there but we have not found them yet and at last we have something tangible to show.  However do remember this may not be made available in the UK ... but just maybe.

Also - it is for big guys as has been said already.  But HALO will be much much more than just a large mainsail on an existing hull.  If you are much less than 100kg you may struggle when it blows - it really is intended to be so ... HALO = Heavy And Large Option.

Nigel - who's got the new boat?

Blaze 720 - looks good, good luck with the testing? Is that Burghfield or somewhere else?

The moth belongs to my brother (Adam or gbr884 on the forum).

The boat needs a bit of work but with a new sail and near new foils it was a bargain buy at only £2,200!

I cant wait to pinch it off him and have a go now

Mark.

Yep. I was given 1050, which is what I'd requested and figured would be fair after a large amount of geeking into the parametric sensitivity of factors on PY. I was kinda expecting to be beaten back on my request but I guess they now have a separate prize for foilers and non recognised yardstick boats, which means they won't effectively penalise new boats in case they get into the choccies, causing contoversy in the otherwise completely fair and meaningful arena that is handicap pursuit racing (slightly sarky comment..)
I started 1 min ahead of the phantoms and 1 min behind the RS200s, same start as the Rooster 8.1s I think that the 8.1s are shockingly badly handicapped at 1050, and I think this may be a hangover from last years BM where they came along as an unrecognised class so the organisers probably wanted to nip them in the bud a bit, but now the class is stuck with that number a bit I guess. I reckon 1060-1065 would be more appropriate.
I felt fairly happy with how I sailed, felt pretty tidy, made 90% good calls and sailed the boat as well as I could have hoped for, which is all you can aim for in a race like this, esp with cleats frozen open and windexes frozen ect.
I felt I was at least the equal of the phantom upwind, (my boat seems pretty electric in the light and moderate upwind) and deep downwind, but the noticable difference was in the powered up fetching of which there was plenty (when I say powered up, we had 4-7kts most of the race, one or 2 10 knot puffs, and 10 mins of glass at the end). I guess this'll be due to the phantom being a big, light boat, high prismatic and very chined / flat aft. I think that a stiffer boom (in the pipeline) as well as a shorter heel cup would've both helped a lot for the fetching stuff.
I reckon I had a big enough lead on the N12s that I could've started a minute back with the phantoms (i.e PY down to 1040) and still got 2nd.
All completely speculative obviously but good for banter.
Dan (2 fingers still numb 24h on...)

Daniel

Well done - it looked good in the conditions.

I was in the Halo, the bigger (heavy weights) rig Blaze and had a very enjoyable and quite educational race as well.  It was Halo's very first race against any craft whatsoever so we were unable to suggest any sort of  PN figure to QMSC but did declare that it had a sail plan 15% bigger than standard in advance and that we did expect it to be faster ... which it was.

However I wish we had suggested a number to them having read about your experience here.  The Blaze has sailed off 1047 for many years now - in the event QMSC allocated Halo the equivalent of 926 !!!  ie 13 minutes behind the Phantoms and 10 minutes behind the Merlins or 14 minutes faster than a standard Blaze.  Good learning excercise anyway and I have a good list of changes now to improve it further but a few people were wondering around the bar afterwards exactly how 15% sail area change equates to 121 pn number change !

We know they should and must be conservative with untried craft.  However this would suggest Halo is, by a long county mile, considerably faster than almost any other hiking singlehander, Moths excluded.   God knows what they will allocate us next time if we appear with a spinnaker !   We better take advice ....

PS - I did enjoy racing with the Cherubs and 600's though !!

Just ran a few numbers through my PY prediction spreadsheet (usual health warnings apply..) and I'd say that putting 11.5 sail area on a blaze would drop the PY by about 20, so from 1047 to 1027, assuming that the sailor is bigger giving more RM.
Similarly I did the same on the rooster 8.1 and it spits out a 15 drop (compared to the laser standard at 7.1) taking in the sailor growing 10kg and 5cm, so a drop from 1078 to 1063.

Daniel

Thanks for the view. Would be interested in details of prediction assumptions.  The actual sail area change from Blaze to Halo is from 10.3 to 11.9m,  The mast is 35cm taller (6.5/6.85) and on Halo we rotate the mast.  All else remains the same.

Until we race in many more races it is difficult to predict what it really will do in terms of PN.   But it does point exceptionally high and initial feeling is that it will be between 1010 and 1025, maybe towards the lower end .... if we get to 926 I'll patent whatever it is !
