I was thinking that Y&Y should have a Spy Photo section... you know like
the Car mags. This picture is from the development thread before i had
this idea.
I saw it in France when sailing at Carnac in the Cherub Euro Cup / Briezh
Skiff round 5.
Apparantly it is called a LT300.
40kg all up
Carbon windsurfer mast
PBO rigging
3 sails
single trapeze
and it went like stink ( big air )

I think looking at the guys website the idea is to make foiling more
accessable to mere mortals who may not be skilled or the right
build to sail a moth.
see www.sailm4.co.uk
Dose anyone know any more about the project is he using standard moth foils?
|
Posted By: 49erGBR735HSC
Date Posted: 03 Oct 05 at 10:24am
I really like the idea of the M4. If she's going to be one-design it will make foiling more accesable to everyone. The outriggers under each wing look a good idea and may appeal to more people just due to the fact that the boat looks less likely to crash and burn. I wouldn't underestimate the boat because she does look like having a bigger sail than the moth and could be quite interesting if she is operating with different foils. Sailing in lighter winds may be interesting too because the technique would be to keep the out-riggers out of the water. If the moths develope past the M4 as Isis suggested, the M4 may be a good feeder class but just noow she looks like direct competition, although she probably will cater for sailors at the heavier range of the moth fleet. Will be very interesting to see how things turn out

What I was meaning is that on the lighter days, you'll need to try and keep the outer hulls out of the water to reduce the drag of the boat and the overall wetted surface, ie trying to fly both external hulls located under the wings

This won't damage the moth per se, it will merely attract people from non-foiling classes to foiling. However classy it is, the moth will always be a really hard boat to sail, not accessible to everyone. A production foiler would simply bring more people to the idea of foiling.

I am the M4 designer. I have posted a couple of photos that have not been put on the website yet. I am intrested in all the comments. The project has been formed to try and bring foiling to more people. Hence the 14ft hull, and the racks with pods on the ends. I has to be said this is still very early stages, this is purely the 2nd protoype which is a long way off being the finish product. A lot of work is being done, looking into fesibility, practicality, and how much its going to cost.
A few stats, Hull weight 18kg, Sailing weight 45kg
Max speed in 7.5 knots of breeze 14.3knots of boat speed
Max sailing speed 20 knots so far yet to be full tested.
Any questions or comments fire away.

Whats the sail area in relation to the moth?
|
Posted By: redback

It looks interesting and I guess its a lot easier to sail than a moth. I'm surprised it gets foiling in 7.5 knots of wind the crew must be hollow!
|

7.5 knts is Force 3
I would be most dissapointed with any performance boat that didn't get up and go in this windspeed.
When sailing 5.9 and grossly overweight we would be twin traping and flying a hull .
Perhaps Scottish breeze is more powerful

I find that the boats with the most outrageous poiting abilities are
the ones with jibs - Nat 12 and Int Canoe for starters. Single sails
are better off the wind, but a decent jib set up adds loads of
efficiency upwind...
|
Posted By: Scooby_simon
Date Posted: 15 Oct 05 at 8:53pm
It depends on the boat and the Speeds involved (and the courses to be sailed).
I only have recent Cat experience; but upwind the jib just gets in the way - it's what limits the pointing; Cats with single sails (Shadow; Inter 17; A class; 18HT) all point a little higher than the boats with jibs. now reaching (espically when not fully powered up the jib helps heaps as it helps to keep the flow attached to the back of the sail. Same goes for off the wind without a kite.
Again; off the wind with the kite up IMO the jib just gets in the way / disturbs what is going on with the kite putting flow down the back of the mainsail.

The moth rules are 'open', so that if it's not banned, then it's allowed. So you could put a jib on a moth ( as long as total sail area is >8 sq m.
The 'new IC' is intended to increase downwind speed and get therefore apparent wind sailing /big gybing angles- so taking the jib off and bigger main should help.
Most 'pointing' boats point cos that's their fastest vmg upwind, because the hull shape / rig etc etc are such that there is little speed increase for footing off.
eg laser points high, but makes lots of leeway.
A cat, or moth ( esp a foiling moth ) has low pointing angle, but the boat speed is very high - so are much better vmg upwind.
|
Posted By: ssailor
Date Posted: 16 Oct 05 at 7:17pm
Depends on the class entirely, jibs may limit pointing but they keep
the flow over the main - in the 14 in anything above a three or four we
are planing upwind thus we bear off by about 3-5degrees this is quicker
than someone trying to point - to plane or not to plane

SA threads seem to suggest it's going to be similarly priced to the musto/700- can't see how that will be feasible once you pay gordon...
remains to be seen if it's just a flash in the pan compared to the other two principal classes that are building momentum.

I have no idea how they can think that will be built for the MPS price ... it's too big for a single hander - I bet they do a 2 person version.

Can you imagine dragging a 16 foot 80 kg hull up a slip way by yourself, especially when its all up sailing weight will be much heavier, after a hard days sailing? Would be a nightmare . Would be interesting if they did make it a double hander with a high aspect main sail and no jib. Can't see her fairing well agasinst the MPS comercially as it stands.

that it is heavier than it should be to go as fast as it looks....

I suppose we don't really know if the quoted 80kg is bare hull, or rig and foils too...

Hence the reason I thought it was bare hull weight. For it to be as light as the MPS but 2 foot longer wouldn't that demand a more expensive construction to make a boat which is bigger but just as light? ........ (and from what I remember, Contenders are fairly light, aren't they???)

From the contender class rules:
16.1 The hull in dry condition shall not weigh less than 83kg including all fixed fittings and a traveler strop, but excluding the centreboard and its retaining fittings. In case the compass is fixed to the hull the trade mark and type of the compass must be noted in the measurement certificate.

The rules can't be argued with, but always thought they were really light boats. I haven't sailed contenders before but know a lot of people who did and still do. Maybe they're light in comparision to 505s which is the other class the majority of the Contender sailors I know also sailed....

I was meaning from the point of hull design, from what I've seen of them through pictures, the hulls are a bit different to the new cherub designs. There are other elements such as the rig and the upwind sail plan , although slightly smaller upwind area, the sail plan looks pretty impresive. Are UK Cherubs allowed fixed poles?

It started life as a design commission for Julian but he now has two months to get production into full swing...

They can't get it on the water until Gul have finished designing their new sailing kit to match their Tron-inspired boat. (Some of the younger contributors to this forum may well not remember Tron, let's just say that upwind and down Will and Lucy will be tacking and gybing through angles of precisley 90 degrees, and if you try to duck their transom your boat will be vaporised...)
They went for the first fitting of their new kit the other day, Gul have released this picture as they reckon this could represent the way forward in skiff clothing in 2006...
