Be careful... If you post anything you will get abuse for being a newbie... Just so you are aware in advance and don't take it personally... Unless it's actual abuse, but that's also par for the course...

Luke, The rig is a bit different in several ways, unstayed, sleeve luff, full battened, square top, single camber inducer on top batten, and the wishbone boom. Whilst I probably did more "novel" stuff in one hit with this than you probably should from a risk standpoint, basically all of it has worked at least as well as I'd hoped. Naturally I could change to a normal boom, a track/boltrope/halyard sail ect and I was prepared to have to do it if some of my ideas hadn't worked out, but all of the design features are there for a reason and like I say I'm really happy with the combination of smplicity and utility that I have got. As for the back brushing, yes you do tend to get a bit of a brush on the tacks, less so the gybes but I can't see this being a problem - relatively low number of cycles, reinforced dacron brushing reinforced dacron. Time will tell I guess. Rupert, I'd love to say that the boat was Cornish, and she is in spirit, but unlike all the tooling, I had to go as far afield as hants to get the sail, mast, boom and hull made. Which only represented 3 weeks effort in the context of a 3 year project so I guess I can claim it. I have a flag of St Pirran somewhere on a sticker.. Dan

Oh yeah, as for the mainsheet / traveller. I obsessed for a long time about how to get an adjustable sheeting range to 15deg with aft boom takeoff (as necessitated by the wishbone), whilst retaining the better ergonomics of the centre main, and without the cost/complication/sand clogging/toe banging possibility of a traveller track. After much effort I hit on an idea that I have been pointed out is similar in many ways to a self tacking jib system - the traveller "car" can move on the traveller bridle independantly of mainsheet tension. I get a 2:1 from deadended at the transom corner (P), up through the "car", to the boom, back through the "car," down to transom corner (S) where it is led down under a ridge on the centre of the cockpit floor (avoiding tiller interference), and led back to an upside down main ratchet block in the middle of the cockpit, also avoiding inetrference from a split bridle on the front end of the toestrap, which, like most of the cockpit attachments, is made by simple lashings onto moulded in flush surfboard leashplug inserts. The traveller too is led back under the cockpit to split controls in the middle of the cockpit. The bridle itself can be kept bar tight withought ever interfering with the tiller (which has a fairly old school curve to it, which exists to just avoid hitting the side of the cockpit). All a bit novel/risky and I consider myself pretty lucky that all of it seems to work ok. So far. Traveller controls in blue, main in red: |

That's what I figured from looking at it for a while. Nice, elegant, complicated yet simple.. string...

Does the red three-blobbed thing (I assume the "car"?) move across like a traveller, or is it fixed? similar to a mirror style then.

Indeed the red 3 blobbed thing can indeed move across the traveller independantly of the mainsheet tension. And is controlled by the blue single blobbed thing also known as the traveller. There is a pic that makes it a bit clearer a couple of pages back. Its not much like my old mirror at any rate.

No, I thought it was fixed at the corner, not at all like a mirror at all. I was referring to the triangle you get with the mainsheet coming from one corner. Very original mainsheet system!

Have you built the boat as a one off for your own satisfaction ? Or do you have commercial aims ?
If the latter, I'm curious to know where you think it will sit in market place. Well done, it looks nicely built and finished. Most people don't get past the dreaming stage. Edited by boatshed |

Absolutely brilliant, Daniel, and a great inspiration to those of us that dream of such things but never 'do' (even if reading of the hours/weeks you spent making the hull moulds is, er, somewhat off-putting!). I can't believe how much like a production boat it looks, and some great innovations (the wishbone/kicker/mainsheet arrangement is one I've failed to come up with despite a number of pipe-dreams concerning something similar). Do keep us updated on how things pan out; I'd be especially interested to have your opinion on the likely PY, not least in view of the discussion on the "Devoti singlehander" thread - that now has nothing to do with the Devoti singlehander but much more with something like you've already built, with the difference that wings and a kite are on the agenda for that, something that i'd have thought would give your boat more bang-for-buck quite simply and cheaply? |
