An appropriate night for a witch hunt.
What's worse bigots or bullies?

And as of this morning, we all now know that calling someone a poof or a queer is a hate crime that the Met will take very seriously.

I wonder if it applies to calling a heterosexual person a poof too?  It's all very confusing isn't it???

Just heard that on the radio as I read your post.

Legal or illegal if used in a derogatory way, indicating that something, someone or a situation is less than ideal then it's homophobic, By association the phrase is saying that being gay is less than ideal.

Same applies to words like gay, ghey, ghay etc.

Kids in schools are being taught about these issues, 10yr olds are probably more savy on the subject than we are. Whether they abide by the principles of respect and good manners is up to the parents I suppose. Those that do take it on board would probably be slightly shocked by hearing that kind of "banter"  at a sailing club.

Racial slurs went through the same evolution. All of us (hopefully) would be shocked if someone used similar racist "banter". It was common place 30 yrs ago and still hasn't disappeared completely. I suppose it's reached a stage were public racial insults can be challenged vigorously without the challenger getting the tag of bully.

Homophobia in male dominated sport is always going to be a difficult nut to crack because of the overly Macho nature of some men who participate.

Indeed - I certainly took a fair share of abuse/banter for having a lilac decked Solo.  It didn't bother me in the slightest.  You could say I was asking for it, but if I wanted a Vela Grey boat, I'd have bought another RS or a Laser- besides I'd had my fill with 'macho' faux carbon nonsense that look a bit Halfords.

Besides, it was a UK class, designed by Jack Holt.  Unlike Down Under, all boats here are/should be, female.  Therefore putting a feminine shade of lipstick on my sow, was, imho, the right thing to do.  I guess that makes me a sexist; and also lacking in sensitivity for the potential gay guy who overheard me and my boat being called 'bent' in the dinghy park or on Facebook.

I wish I was 10, it probably makes a lot more sense to told how to think rather than muddle through the various machinations of who is or isn't entitled to use certain words, and in what contexts, of this common language we share so freely.

So is being Ginger, or Short, or too Tall, or Fat, or having questionable fashion sense, which brings the thread back full circle as to why one particular 'minority' seems to shout louder and receive more attention than others and why sailing has suddenly been targeted.

And so you should and didn't think for one moment you weren't going to get, the problem is, although it's called humour and deliberately provocative, there is clearly a confection of humourless fools who would argue that the act in itself was homophobic or designed to provoke homophobic response if you follow the fuzzy logic that emanates from some here..

They are, but what gets said out of earshot of teachers and potential victims hasn't changed so much since we were at school, robust 'banter' is still there as it is in my workplace and amongst groups of friends, when out of the public domain.
And nor should it change.
What the voices in my head are saying or what is said amongst friends is frankly none of anybodies damned business.
We shall be judged on how we treat our fellow human beings, whoever they are.
A direct attack from one individual specifically targeting another individual is not acceptable on any platform.

I await the squeal of tyres from the met police and the sound of sharpening pitch forks.

So are there any great or even well known gay male sailors?
AFAIK the last one I met was Ted Heath.
