Things are moving slowly at Banshee HQ. Due in part to some low life nicking my spanky new stainless trolley form the firm that was making it ( he'd taken a eon to make the thing as it is). Meaning that new cradles have to be made. The trolley loss is quite debilitating as I can't move the boat in and out of the garage, without another person around, and what will the weather we have been having it's been hard to do much! I will post some pics when I've got something that shows progress! In the meanwhile have a look at Stage 2 plans for a fast family cruising Trimaran. The boats adjustable racks will be removed and replaced with the outrigger hulls which in turn I am intending for the hull shape to be a reasonable Moth hull. I'll be making 2 hulls so I might as well make a 3rd! That's the plan anyway. Need to finish Stage 1 first!

So let me get this right, you'll have a singlehanded trapezer, a doublehanded hiker, a twin wire skiff, a tri, and the outriggers will also make Moths?

Is the plan just to have them Moth shaped so you have the hull mould, or will you actually have functioning Moths (remove from Tri, add rigs, add foils and tramps and go sailing) as the outriggers?

I have to say that is a massive, huge ask to get that lot to work properly and there must be a lot of compromises involved.  Trouble is, unless the trimaran structure is somehow compromising the Cherub with regards to weight or sailplan, which it does not seem to be, then I can't really see any reason why it won't work and that will be a truly superb bit of engineering.  It seems rally daft on paper yet at the same time genius...I hope you've patented it!  The possibilities for sailing depending on who is available and what it's blowing on what size water are almost endless.  If, and it is still a big if at this stage, it catches on, the open meeting possibilites are really interesting, kind of a multidisciplinary event like a triathlon, with the ability to shift the race program around depending on the forecast for the event, or even have a "sail in whatever configuration you want when you want" as long as you've done a race in each configuration by the end of the event.  My only concern (and I know nothing about multihull design) is tha the outriggers are too far back, I would have thought with a pitchy boat like a Cherub you'll be constantly burying the leeward float.

Only other thing left is to be able to unbolt the central hull and have a foiling cat!

Good luck with it, I'll be following it with interest!

Hi Iain,

Think Weta. The out riggers won't be removable and sailed as Moths. But the mold for the out riggers will be a passable Moth shape. The mold being a little longer than a Moth. So if I get really keen I may pop another hull off it and put together a Moth.

This Tri is only a cruising option. With a reefable main.

The other set ups are quite easy to make work. With a second mast position and extendable racks and two main bulk heads for each shroud point mast foot position.

I came to this design decision, as in common with a lot of people, getting a regular crew is difficult (hence the single handing option) the lake I'm at is pretty difficult to sail high performance boats at, but fantastic for my sons Optimist sailing etc... and so I didn't want to change clubs. This also explains the other options available with this design configuration ( twin hiking, double handed single trap ) As I am not allowed a double trap boat at BSC.

I'm sure something like this is quite easy to smirk at and some would wonder why do it. Well I want to sail this sort of lightweight responsive boat, but i'm not prepared to give up a club that is really good for the family just so I get what I want. This way everyone should get what they want.

Jack

PS

Did I mention that I am also thinking about Tri-foiling her as well? Think Windrider Rave.

This is of course all in the future and for a bit of experimental fun but is the advantage of removable racks.

Fecking genius, I really like it.  However it would be proper cool if the outriggers were sailable in their own right...imagine taking that on holiday!

Good luck with it, I think it's brilliant.

That is going to be one hell of an acheivement when its all finished.

The tri-foiler option would just make it even more amazing. You could make
it like a mini hydroptere. That would be awesome.

if you were paying for ronstan then why not upgrade to harken? arent they pretty much the same pirce. just harken look nicer i think. that said, ordering a mainsheet block for my rs300 and the harken carbo was cheaper then the holt new range (dynamic?) blocks.
