'Formula Kite' is a box rule, and they only had 52 men and 15 women at their worlds - and that's the 'Olympic ready' discipline that is sounding the death knell of windsurfing.

I don't know the answer for sure, but I think it involves one design - if only one woul dgain enough momentum.

it's early days for kiting- and to be fair, that bullsh*t two years ago just muddied the pathway for them.  But with announcements like this, then I think it's fair to say kiting is growing and as a discipline will feature in competitive sailing's future.

Compare that the recent PWA event in Pozo- it strikes as very amateur when a Princeton Grad Pro Sailor decides to splat accusations of a competition judge being a drug trafficker all over twitter....

OK back to SailFest,  debriefing process under way and looking towards next year.

One challenge this year has been the clash with  lots of other events.  You can never avoid that completely,  but any thoughts on whitsun (late May)?

I don't think you have a prayer of avoiding significant dates in the summer. That is, after all, why the major handicap events evolved to be in the winter...

I suspect that Bank Holidays will always present problems as the are other well established events such as Bala, Coniston etc.  I have just heard a whisper that the Supernovas are heading to Exe for that weekend.

I was rather waiting for someone else to comment on this but as they have not then here goes. I think the best thing about Sailfest was the chance for small classes to share their Nationals. I think that if you went through the lists of Nationals attendances and selected every class showing less than 20 boats you might be on a winner. Those classes would not be tied up elsewhere because they would be with you! Starts could be combined for boats of similar performance if numbers were too low for a personalised start. Last week if you include Bytes, Skiffs, Iso's and 2 Altos a total of 29? boats were racing nationals out of 45? competitors. I also think that the courses should not be too taxing as although Nationals need to test competitors it need not try to kill them! even though the Byte Nationals turned into a bit of a 'dogs breakfast' it did contain a bit of everything. Louis Saunders reveled in the harsh conditions of Saturday but Rick Whitehouse had his revenge on Sunday.

In my experience most sailors want to sail, eat, laugh, drink without spending too much money. As I accompanied my novice Byte sailing friend to tally off his movement was seriously restricted by soreness in his nether regions. A cheerful member of Sailfest staff asked, "Would you like to try the Velodrome"...........Another consideration should be the venue and it's access to civilisation. I promised a young friend a stick of rock, fail.

We very much appreciated the efforts made by the charming Sailfest staff and we enjoyed the Bed and Breakfast accommodation in spite of the suspect scrambled egg. We did not attend the lecture given by the nutritionist, because we were busy with cheesy chips and Holstien, but those who did reported that it was very interesting, like the ISO sailers who emerged from the lecture room and set about drinking what looked like a 5 gallon jar of red wine. The following morning at breakfast most of the previous nights attendees sat round a big table fueling up with a good English breakfast. The nutritionist sat with them tucking into a packet of seeds and a glass of water.

Sailfest....so near and yet so far.

£69.00 for a single hander........that needs to change as well! Sailors did get a bit of coaching and trackers but the 'former boys' tracker never worked.

I would point out in fairness that £69 was for Friday coaching, 2 days Nationals and the 'big' raymarine persuit race on Monday. Most people however seemed only interested in the Sat and Sun sailing.
