ILCA 2014 Handbook:- Rule changes: If you have a good idea for a rule change, talk first to some other sailors and also to class officials to see whether they share your opinion. If this is the case, then formulate the rule change as precisely as possible and add a justification. Next, send your proposal to the Chief Measurer of the Class, Jean-Luc Michon (e-mail: chiefmeasurer@laserinternational.org.) He will discuss it with the other members of the Technical and Measurement Committee. If recommended the proposal will then be presented to the World Council. Finally, if the World Council and the Advisory Council agree with your proposal, the rule change must be approved by two thirds of the membership. Put up or shut up.....

What a lot of the laser nay-sayers seem to be missing is that there's a large group of people who don't care what boat they sail. They don't care if it's "comfortable" or easy to sail, or whether the mainsheet gets caught round the transom or if the class rules are a bit odd. What they care about is doing big regattas against quality competition.
This year I've done 9 large regattas, 4 of them have had well over 100 competitors, 6 of them have been international events with IJ, all of them have had world class sailors at the front of the fleet and a depth of talent that means that when you stuff up your start and have to get past the person in 73rd overall, you still have to work for it. The boat is being sailed at a very high level, and at the front the gains remaining to be made are extremely marginal. That's the sailing I want to do. I don't care if someone designs a slightly better rudder or more comfortable deck profile for hiking. I do it because of the racing. We could be using oppies for all I care. No class other than the laser gives you the kind of competition that I've just described. Compare this to an RS100 open meeting I witnessed last year, where there were 8 boats, and the guy who won it seemed to still be working out how to get the kite up.

Far less of a fuddy duddy than me, then! I do like debates like this - no one on the forum has any influence at all over what happens to the Laser (except by buying one, or not), but we still argue about it like good'uns! |

According to Sandgrounder we do!
I do agree with bustinben, in fact but...he implies that Laser is the pinnacle of the sport. It is a shame that the 'pinnacle of the sport' is out of date! Regarding standards in ordinary national racing, RS100? From my position as observer and terrible sailor it seems to me that if the class 'stars' do not turn up the standard in most classes is not that hot. I was however very impressed with the Olympians when I saw them once.

Put up or shut up.....
What ... on a general forum !? You know better than that .... I expect I'd have to be a CA paid up member again as well, even own another Laser, go to dull national annual meetings, talk with committee's at multiple levels, liase with official design rights holders, snuggle up to the manufacturer and still wait decades for even something like a decent kicker set-up (It was suggested 'officially' back about 1972 or earlier I think .... and very probably on many occasions since as well). I'm far too old for all that stuff. We live in an age of social media and forums which is why we are all 'here'..... hot beds of ideas, opinions and banter verging on entertainment even those that do not toe any official line. Sometimes people 'get upset' if they do not agree - but that is general forums for you. But if new ideas upset (or even old ones come to that !), then with respect maybe the relevent suitably moderated CA forum is a safer prescription. Besides the third alternative was to go sail something else which when our knees started to go on strike was to prove a latter day pleasure. I/We wish the Laser well .... those of us who are 'ex-Laser' do still care a bit you know ! Mike L. PS - nows time for some sailing ... ![]() |

Checked our Lasers last night, after quite a fun breezy race, which naturally they robbed me of on handicap, I doubt one of them was class legal, and two knots had come undone, as Commodore should I chuck them out?

You're right, club racing in lasers is not like the kind of event I'm talking about in terms of quality, and neither are the GP events - but the fact is that if you sail a laser you have access to that level of competition. Other classes just don't have the same thing on offer.
