Do people see this as a vote against progress i.e.a reluctance to change the status quo or just the smaller nations ensuring they stay in the race?

It's a vote by dinosaurs... ok so the smaller nations want to keep the boat they've spent time developing sailors for but FFS the line up of boats for 2012 is just BORING, and really not reflecting what the sailing community at large sail. OK so I know that asia etc is not exactly the same as grafham but symetrical spinnakers really is a bit last century - they hardly have them on keelboats nowadays! |

I think it's a shame for those nations where sailing is a well developed sport that they haven't taken a step forwards, but I suppose that we musn't confine our view of the cuurrent state of sailing to our own country; some may see 470s as dated here, but I guess in other places they are still exciting and accessible.
I'm a 470 fan, I just wanted a change for the sake of women's sailing. I guess if we waited until 1988 to have our own class anyway then we can wait a little longer for the next step. |

Very dissapointing but not surprising ... I guess we need to blame the process again.

The 470 is sailed worldwide, can cope with a large range of weather conditions, can be tuned to suit different bodyweights and involves great skill by helm and crew to get the most out of it. How is that bad? Can't say I'm a big fan, but probebly only because of my anglocentric outlook meaning I sailed Fireballs instead. I'd love a go in one to see what I've been missing. Has to be better than a skiff no one sails, though.

It's not a vote against progress. It's pretty much what Jim said - "Must say I think they've got that right. Ditching the 470, which is popular with the small countries, for a boat that seems to have few boats anywhere, didn't come out of the trials well, apparently has has no class racing and seems to still be in development doesn't sound like the smartest of decisions to me. I wish Julian had done the job properly and designed a new hull..." It's just that currently there isn't an appropriate more modern alternative to the 470 with enough distribution. |

Reply to Laser 4000 - the 470 represents the sailing done by the vast majority of dinghy sailors, not the fashion victims at a few selected and priviledged venues in one or two of the more affluent countries in the world.
as to Villan - when someone comes up with a 2 man boat for heavyweights which provides such good racing in a wide variety of conditions then the Star will be replaced. It did provide the most televisual SAILING medal race at the Olympics (as opposed to the sorry sight of bedraggled acrobats clinging to the hulls of their upturned boats in the Olympic boat rightting final!
