Having done a stint as Commodore at our club when I got the job by default, the VC resigned for good reasons, I was asked to be VC and I found myself in the top job a year later ...
I pushed the club to update, we started a program of new changing rooms and kitchens to bring them into the 21st century using members and grant funding, we also made the Club “CASC ready”, the club is now benefiting, but it was hard graft for my committee and the one after mine. It would have been far easier to have simply managed what we had and to not rock the boat. IMO each committee comes in with a different approach and tackles a different aspect of the club operations. You need to respect that. If you don’t like the way the club is being run you really do need to engage by giving something back at committee level. If a club has 100 members, and you have 10 people engaged at committee level on a three year rotation ... it would suggest everyone who considers sailing to be a lifetime sport should do at least one spell as a committee member. I would have welcomed Committee members who did not agree with me, it is good to be challenged, otherwise you cannot see the downsides of where you are steering the club. Ref. The liability of committee members; since my tenure, a more recent committee put a lot of work into revising the M&A to relieve the General Committee of any liabilities, in order to encourage members like turnturtle to participate ... it might be worth looking into this. Finally; I learnt a huge amount through the process, about subjects that I had previously known very little and in terms of personal development I gained a great deal. I really would commend “stepping up to the plate”.

Aah delicious anarchy! A man after my own heart.. screw the bureaucracy. Or you could of course stand as I did and force your own views upon them, no forms got filled in, no health and safety kitchen inspections got permitted, complaints from neighbours got ignored or told firmly they shouldn't have moved here in the first place, we parked on the promenade when the council installed pay for parking meters, ignored licensing hours and generally a good time was had by all. The club became twenty thousand pounds richer, we installed a computerised starting lights and results system, set up a group to report the results to the PY system, improved the winch safety, got a deal from the council for a brand new club and concrete slipway which the Nimby members voted down. So I left and now there are H&S and no parking notices everywhere, all the forms have been filled in and RYA bureaucracy dealt with, but we get no meals on a thursday night and the sailors have pretty much been ignored for the couple of years since. Moral of the tale if you want stuff, do it yourself and don't complain when someone else does things differently if you're not involved. Edited by iGRF - 17 Aug 18 at 9:17am |

Well said and well done for instigating, I am of the belief that if more clubs did this RYA would help out with nonsensical paper work, campaign on behalf of clubs to allow a central system, if you are affiliated it's a given that your club complies with data protection etc

that depends on the structure of the Club and it's legal status in terms of incorporation ...
which is a reason for paid staff in certain roles, but that brings about issues of the relationship betwee nthe paid staff and the committee/ Officers

That's a model that can, and does, work, for larger clubs. But smaller clubs, probably the large majority are not big enough to sustain paid staff to take on key management roles - without big increases in costs. The model of local sailing clubs depends on members doing the work. There's a place for large (semi)commercial sailing venues, but it would be the end of most local sailing (or at least racing) were that to be the only option.

It’s hard to get enough volunteers to run a club. It’s even harder to get volunteers if others are paid for the efforts.
I’ve had experienced of this at another (not sailing) club. The treasurer got paid (well), no one else did. It wasn’t sustainable and ended in tears.

All depends on who you are paying; paid caterers or a catering franchise might work for some smaller clubs.
It also strikes me that there is a fair amount of software ... Dutyman, Sailwave and subscription software that can make management a lot easier than it was.

Com/members run club or a pay and play?
I know which I'd prefer but sadly I think the trend is going the other way. I reckon the main problem won't be lack of participants or members, it'll be lack of volunteers. I'm not likely to volunteer for com work, tried it once and I was lousy at it, I don't have the temperament for com work. I do volunteer for other stuff around the club. Done OOD and safety boat perhaps a dozen times yearly on average over the last couple of years and perhaps more importantly I don't whinge about exec com decisions, lack of bog roll in the loos, messy changing rooms when the cadets have been about and egos on the exec com. I've got an ego too (as we all have) and I don't see why I or those on the com should always can it. So long as there's good racing on a Sunday I'd much prefer a members club.
