Well 'Bandit' is a state of mind or 'intent' imv, good sailors deliberately choosing a particular ride to suit the course/conditions, whatever. Now I give the Miracles tongue in cheek hell for being Bandits because some of them are very very good sailors, but the essence is they genuinely class race down our lake and it is a joy to watch young girls and their Grandads, or Mums and Daughters, and I love the laughter that emanates from them when I moan about them giving me another thrashing, just as I love showing them my stern now and again, which is the fun of it all larking about with kids and giving them a steer now and again, just as their natural speed and atheletism shows you you're not quick enough.
So as to handicaps, I can't beat it and may as well join in, I actually don't mind what they end up giving me, the fun will be trying to beat it, wether it's faster or slower than some other old hunk of junk built in the middle of last century, means nothing to me, a guy on facebook recommended it to me as a vehicle to use at CVDRA so I bought it and it dropped me down the fleet amongst these Miracle & Feva kids, and I can't wait to get it fired up next weekend. I think that quote about 1230 and 1200 was mine, earlier. The seat, whether it is on a Sprint or bolted on will give more leverage. In the old days, with the crappy old Nylon sail as standard on the standard boat, I think the Minisprint's white Dacron sail made for the biggest speed increase. Thing is, the seat adds weight and gets in the way, so in sub seating weather, the narrow boats are faster.
All in all, I'd say the seat exaggerates the problem of it being slow in a light wind compared to normal shape dinghies and a bandit in a blow. I race against Miracles too, and recently raced Lightnings against one of the helms. I was quicker than him, but not by very much, but getting ahead in the Minisail takes a course with screaming reaches. I suspect the MS is slightly slower, which probably means 1200 is about right, as the Miracle has a - how shall we put this - kind? - handicap. As for racing off a Topper handicap, that is simply wrong. |

The Topper handicap for minisail's is in use at my club, they are still not winning, all the "py" topics on sailing websites have contributor's stating clubs can set their own number ?
I have only raced Sprint 4 times, 2 dnf and 2 places, so not affected py yet.

'Personal endorsements' ....of suitable PN's ' are now an OK basis ? ..... errrr so no bias even possible there then ....( and GRF of all people scrambling for any available suitable anecdotal PN 'fig leaf' justification !) .
April the 1st already guys ? Pull the other one .... Sounds far far too 'cosy' all round to some of us .... |

As you probably know, I've never been one to believe in conspiracy theories, leaving them to certain others. Given a choice in accuracy between PY and guesswork, I'll go with PY every time, and like the GL numbers, my guesswork is based on PY results. I have a feeling that GRF is planning to bribe the PYAG to get the Minisail handicap set to 1310, which would mean it could almost beat a Blaze at 1070. Yes, I know this was an error... I'm not one to let this get in the way of daft postings. |

My club's got the largest collection of Minisails in "the world" ( say in "Jeremy Clarksons" voice), six at the last count, plus my "Aquabat".
Their is one of every type.
The "Aquabat" is the only one that's actually won a race. The sailing secretary at my club therefore is the only person with experience trying to set a py, he originally set py with advice from Rupert, the boats are simply not competetive against new boats to their original py, only when boats have decent sails and rigging can they compete. |

Not really the other not person with experience of setting yardsticks for Minisails. I started doing so in the late 80s and have done so at intervals ever since, both for clubs and the cvrda.
I can quite believe that a Minisail rigged with a 40 year old Nylon sail and terrible controls cannot beat a decently rigged Topper. Not sure that is a way to decide on a yardstick beyond those criteria, though. |

I could have put that better, I should have said, the only sailing secretary with a fleet of minisails to manage.
The modernisation route can only be used on a couple of models.

I should have added, "Rupert I know you know this", "The modernisation route can only be used on a couple of models"
