    Posted: 30 Oct 11 at 6:43pm

Can anyone recommend a trailer manufacture who will be interested enough to build a custom designed cat trailer. I have tried three different manufactures in Shropshire but unless it is a square box or to carry sheep they are not interest. When then find out is for a boat the price doubles.

I can travel within reason and have plans to work to I am just looking for someone who is prepared to take a project on.

Any help would be appreciated

Ambrow trailers in Christchurch are pretty good. They don't mind building from a plan.
Andy sails an F18 too.

Bear in mind that if someone is making you a custom trailer (a new design) as of Saturday just been then it will need an IVA test at your local VOSA centre (or UK or European type approval) before it can go on the road.

Unbraked boat trailers up to 750kg are class O1.

If i remember rightly the main things:
-Lighting, there is more of it (needs 11 pin electrics).
-Rear under run bar

I should say, reading it again, that the rules apply for New, complete vehicles from October last year.
Even existing designs need approval in time for October next year.

Thanks Simon for the info and I was aware that new trailers needed a test certificate.

Thanks for this. I'm looking for a local person to modify an existing trailer for me and this could fit the bill.

Cheers.

Like a lot of stuff it relies on human nature but they all need to have a data plate on with load rating and year of manufacture to be road legal. As you allude to, you can just argue that it is older than it really is but...

I had a 1988 motorcycle trailer with a data plate, I think VOSA would generally need it as evidence of weight loading to see if you are road legal relative to the car you use.

Simon think you are on about Reg 100 plate...ie the VIN and engine number...the only legal info that is required on a domestic car...the weights you see are not legal requirements but are treated as recommendations...hence why Land Rovers never put them on...thus was always hard to prove a Landie was over MAM
