Fairly interested in purchasing a K6 but wondering what it is like for mixed keelboat racing under PY or does anyone race it against dinghies in mixed fleets.

Corms,
Have sailed a k6 for the last few years in py racing at our club, with some success. We race in the fast fleet py sub 1000. mainly fireballs and musto skiffs, 49ers and moths. We have good racing against 29ers and other k6's. Would say they perform best on py at the cusp of trapeze boats getting fully powered up so 8-11 knots. great fun when its blowing too. results from a recent all in handicap in about 10knots of wind. race http://blackwatersailingclub.org.uk/images/raceresults/Osea%20Challenge%20Cup%202014.htm selling mine at the moment, moved onto a new boat http://www.apolloduck.co.uk/display.phtml?aid=348811 Edited by Oli - 20 Jun 14 at 1:54pm |

Thanks for the info Oli.
We have a small mixed fleet of keelboats (Sonata & Impalas) and also dinghies (mainly Albacores). I will be looking for an older K6 at the moment, to see how I get on with her. |

K6 is pretty quick so you will leave Albacores, Sonatas etc a long way behind.

Difficult to say, but you'll have a lonely race.

It would be a bit lonely but Looking for a yacht I can race against keelboats that I can launch and recover from a slipway that can get fairly shallow at low tide but has the fun factor.
The K6 seems to fit the bill

Have you considered a Flying Fifteen? As strange as it seem they have less draft than some dinghies.

Yes, I am considering a Flying Fifteen, as the symmetrical spinnaker would suit our courses better, just a bit concerned about the depth I would require for launching / recovering.
Our slipway can get fairly shallow at low tide and it can be a fair walk to even launch our dinghies. I see from the videos they can be very easy to launch / recover if you have the correct facilities in place. Do you know the approx depth that would be required for the 15? |

mr C an FF wouldn't suit you slip at the club at the lower tides. Other post is right though, it'd be a lonely day on the water with your fleet in a K6.
