The comments in the reports were more telling than the numbers... I'd respectfully suggest that some of the sailors voted not for what they enjoyed sailing most but what they thought was expected of them. I'm not suggesting corruption or anything, merely that they thought through the practical aspects as well and allowed it to influence their voting (I'm convinced that's the case in the two first choice 29erXX votes!)

The 49er FX was chosen because that was what the sailors wanted at the test event in Spain in april, of the 18 sailors giving their preferences 11 had the FX as their first choice, 7 as their 2nd choise, none 3rd choice

The numbers were in summary:
49erFX 11-7-0
RS900 6-6-6
Rebel 1-6-11
29erxx 2-0-0
Aura 0-0-1
Arup 0-0-0

getafix: the choice of women's skiff was pretty clearly a case of practicality- picking the boat that already was in the olympics, that already had a global build and supply chain in place.

Though if you read the actual reports, the Aura didn't exactly sparkle- good looks, but I think the Rebel was liked better by the sailors

Still chuckling at this, just seemd kind of inevitable to me.
I guess kite surfing can try and go back to being kewell and plank sailing can continue to wonder what the RSX has got to do with the rest of them... much the same as we've been wondering what the Star, Finn, 49er and 470 have to do with <most> of the rest of us for some time....
Least the N17 stayed in the line up, binning cats again would have been as dumb as it was the last time round IMO.

Still a wonder that the 49erFX got in opposed to the 900 or Aura.... hey ho.

Just don't know whether to feel euphoria for PlankWindSailors or grief for PlankWindKiters.....sooo tricky...............I can feel an undercurrent for the next sport in gestation:- InternationalGlidingWithaBoardSailerAttachedtoaLongRopeFrom YourTail

It's certainly a funny old world when in 2016 the boards used will be materially slower around a course than those used in the mid 1980s and just as divorced from the recreational end of the sport as were those wobbly Division IIs.

So maybe they'll have to chuck those Finnboys out after all to make way for a kite medal.
Just shows you what thr IOC know then because kiteboard racing was even more boring and difficult to watch than all other types of sailing.

And as for the poor kiteboarders who had started there training I bet you most of them had transferred from windsurfing. Now they are just going back to where they came from.

Oh dear, then it probably doesn't bode well for the 470 then does it, one of them will have to go, it'll either be that or the entire circus gets ditched, the bearded one isn't going to be happy with things as they stand and you saw what happened after he lost his rail bid.

The thought that the notably bureaucratic IOC mioght have any opinion at all this early in the game is a pretty amusing one, isn't it:-) What's the betting this is people spreading the stories they want to hear?
