We used to have an old wooden one - 4396.  I learnt to sail in it.  The bottom caved in on the launching trolley one day though!  My dad somehow managed to replace the damaged area, but it wasn't really a race winner ever again.

Are they still very uncomfotable to hike from?  I remember the gunwhale being a killer on the beat.  Really narrow so dug into the back of your legs

Do the changes mean that you can change the wooden mirror too? can you fill in the hole in the skeg or change the side decks?

Do you think wooden boats will still be competitive against the new design?

Is there a different sail cut for the bermudan rig or do existing sails fit?
If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right

Rupert

We are pushing for £3,500 for a race boat,  Winders are still doing the calculations on moulding times etc,  but as you say with the simpler design and significantly less mouldings this should be much quicker.  This needs to be countered by the fact that the boat will now be built in epoxy for longevity.

Prototype due to be measured by ISAF next week

The older boats had much narrower gunwales,  which probably were not even designed for hiking.  A modern racing Mirror has comfortable rounded gunwales.

You will be pleased to hear the floors are now much stronger

It was agreed that where practicable,  the wood boats should be able to take advantage of the new rules.  The next exercise for the Technical Committee who have been working over time of these changes,  will be to work out exactly what is feasible,  they will certainly be able to fill the hole in the skeg.

In recent years there has been little difference in results between the wood baots and modern FRP Mirrors,  the majority of the changes for the MK3 revolve round the deck moulding,  so we would hope this status quo remain.

The existing sails will fit the Bermudan rig and do work,  although they are quite full as the gaff was quite whippy.  Most of the sail makers now offer two cuts
