We use Hyde Kevlar sails.  Big Purple came with a good set, including 45sqm & 49sqm spinnakers, when we bought her in Feb 2006.  Purchased a new #1 from Wooderz in Exeter this season (again good price & service) and will order a new main during Hyde's sale in Nov 07.

Would be interested in hearing from anyone who has a second hand assymetric for sale.

Hi Guys,

Im based in Walton on the Naze in Essex and am currently looking for a boat. I have raced on a first 36.7 and a half tonner Tumble home II. I am looking for a boat to replace my 1/4 tonner which I sold last year (runnaway bus) and have been seriously considering a projection as they are bang on my price range! I really like the Haven series racing and would also want to do the offshore races to Belgium in the boat. Does anyone know if they will be ok for the saftey requirements?

Also would any local owners object to showing me round their boat or taking me out for a sail?

Cheers

James

Hi James

I'm pretty local to you and done a bit of Haven Series stuff myself (and raced against the boats you mention). The proj won't fulfil the requirements for the Haven Series passages very easily I'm afraid.

They are ORC Cat 3 plus liferaft and would involve a lot of work to bring a stock projection up to scratch - and that's assuming no stability limits are imposed. EAORA, for example, require a minimum SSSN of 20. Upstart's SSSN is 12.

Don't let that put you off though! As you may have noticed another 762 is competing in the Haven Series (White Lightning). I won't bore you with how much I like my boat but I'm based at Levington and could definitely organise a sail at some point - just a bit tied up with my offshore racing at the moment!

jsut been out at mersea, 2 reefs and the number 3, rig pumping like billyo!  had over 9 knots then came back in after 10 mins.  club was registering 20 = 30 knots and had a gust max of 40!

with 2 refs we couldnt get enough tension in the rig, anyone else experience this?

It Must have been lumpy.

First thought is your rig is too loose, we have 25 inners and 30 outters, rig does not move.

Secondly, we never reef! just flatten the main and use tonnes of back stay.

even down wind as the kite can invert the mast in those conditions as we know to our cost!

I think you probably needed more sail to get drive off the keel we only have one reefing point which is not used.

Hope this helps

Peter

25 inners and 30 outers sounds tight to me !

I have mine set at 21 inners and 25 outers , however we are still learning , if left at 30 will this thro time not cause structural probs ?
I viewed a 762 in Weymouth with a really tight rig and it had some impressive cracks in hull structure below fwd floor board near mast post .

I have extended my forestay to allow more mast rake , we seemed to be better upwind yesterday in about 10-12 knots , which is where we have been struggling .
I may try a little more .

Doug

What is your forestay length now it has been extended?

We have a post under the mast which gives support, no sign of cracking yet athough the deck is delaminating in other areas.

For upwind try lots of tension on the main sheet and dont bring it too far up the track, this should give you lift off the keel and tension the forestay.

Our base setting is about 27 outer, 23 inner, but for the conditions described I would wind it up to around the 30/25 level, I do not leave it on that setting after the race but I'd be surprised if leaving it that tight caused any damage. Also when its that windy you should have more backstay on that you think the mast can take, then a bit more. We gave up on reefing the main, when it gets to where a fully flattened main is too much, take it off and go home under jib.

Re Offshore racing, you may have a problem as mentioned above if your organisers stick to SSS numbers, but we have regularly raced (an won) the Swansea-Padstow Race and other local long-distance races, without too much discomfort!

2 reefs seems like plenty! I've never reefed Upstart and we only had one reefing point anyway. We've raced it in 30kts and could handle the boat ok - we were 6 up though and the weight really helped. We found that with everything on really hard we flattened off nicely and by being aggresive with the main (with sh*tloads of kicker) we could keep her pretty upright and trucking upwind.

I don't think we'd stay out there if we had anymore than that.

I will measure my forestay again and let you know Peter . I would guess i lengthened it by about 30-40 mm .

Its good to see rig info coming out , It would seem some adjust for conditions , our Melges guys do their final adjustments minutes before start sequence and leave them slack after racing , they are easier to adjust though .

Doug .
