Started last nights race with a number 3 thinking had made a big mistake.  Some horrendous weather quickly followed through with 32 kt gusts.  We hit 14kts through the water and the boat was very well behaved.  Our Sunday practice session paid off with 4 gybes going seemlessly and the boat very steady.  We are learning its vital to strap the kite in when gybing in these conditions using the barbour haulers.

We had bad start and overtook  a Sig 38 and almost a Prima.  However Leeward mark saw us beating into massive chop.  The Sig sailed underneath us and with our main and rig shaking like a compromised dog, coupled with a lee shore we tacked away and threw the towel in!

Shame, but the sleigh ride means we will be smiling for days to come.  Awesome!

good stuff F Word, sounds like fun.  We had our fisrt sail on sunday with about 20knots the number 3 and the mall kite, good to blow the cobwebs away and supprisingly we didnt break anything, not bad considering it was a mates 21st the night before!  monday was a bit more gentle and no hangovers so we went for the number one and the whomper, again no major problems and some slick gybing.  have to say i might keep this current crew, they almost know what theyre doing.....  we always wang the barbour haulers on no matter what conditions for the gybe, every gybe is slick when theyre on.

Ultimately we decided to enter for IRC classes at the Scottish Series. Our IRC certificate has just arrived and probably not wildly different from the majority at 0.969, however an improvement on 2005 when it was 0.977. If anyone would like me to send them a copy I'd be happy to do that.

F-word - glad you're having fun in the breeze. I won't say that we have the barbour haulers fully down for gybeing, but you definately need them... We don't have problems gybeing in big breeze, just getting the pole back in which often takes two crew. Really flying it's usually so steady that we can almost go dead downwind, so we often drop, gybe and reach to the mark if it's close enough.

Heavy breeze gybing in full planing mode is a bit of a black art that can easily be mastered if all crew are working together. We do it symmetrical dinghy style as follows:

To prep into the gybe haulers both about rail height, helm bears away as pole comes back in unison until virtually dead down the hill. The foredeck crew at this point is sat in cockpit (after hanging off the transom!)  and when the gybe is made he hauls the main across. Gybe made. with helm + trimmer still balancing boat down hill with kite still filling, the foredeck then goes to re set the pole on the new gybe, assisted by helm + trimmers still keeping the kite filling. As soon as the 'made' call is shouted when the pole is re set the trimmers + helm can start hotting it up again, haulers re-set and away you go....

Gybe complete in a fast, safe, seaman like manner with no damage to boat or crew, and virtually no drop in pace....(most of the time!)The key is do it quickly do not let the boat slow down keep the VMG up and the loads on the kit down with apparent wind forward.... Common sence really???

I see the bigger kite has pushed PJ's rating up a bit but should be worth it.  Have you noticed a significant improvement downwind?

we seem to get on with it fine the other day in 10 - 15 knots, only trouble is you cant see where your going

the day before it was blowing 15- 20 so we put up the old kite, 1st sail of the year and didnt want to push our luck, but we were going just as fast in less breeze the net day with the biggun up.  hopefully we'll win a fgew pots this year on the back of it.

Thanks again garth.

Had our first races in Upstart this weekend. Dried her out on friday for a rub down and really felt the benefit as the wind was a bit lighter than we'd ideally have liked.

#4 and trisail have been delivered and the #4 is hilariously tiny but should be a real weapon if it's howling - plus we can then carry the full main for the full downwind rig snapping experience.

You are level rating with us now Oli, I guess we'll see you for the crouch regatta if not before?

Having a #4 + trisail and having to use them in anger on a P762 would be a scary thing.....Big winds + big waves....
